How long will an AMD64 X2 4400+ last?

I was a little disappointed when I heard about Core 2 duo. I upgraded about 3 months ago and now intels new chip will wipe the floor with mine. How long do you think my AMD X2 4400+ will give me good performance during gaming. It can still push high settings for a couple years with a great GPU and great RAM right? I was hoping this CPU would last me for 3 years. Right now I have it OC'd to FX speeds.

you should be fine, but you may need a new video card in the future.

Remember, there is always something new right around the corner.

I don't care what anyone says... unless you want the latest and greatest or just ABSOLUTELY need to have 150 fps over 125 fps in a game (which is freakin insane)... your 4400+ will be fine for a while yet. I own the same proc and I love the thing to death. Most games don't even use both processors yet!

The only thing I plan on getting a Core 2 Duo in is a laptop. Intel basically has the laptop market on lockdown.

I just find it amazing how so many lovers of the X2s for the past year just turn their backs on AMD when Intel hasn't even released the product yet!

LOL, that Intel will release a higher-performing CPU doesn't mean that yours will perform lower than it did a month ago. I'd expect you to be in good shape for the next three years unless there is a sudden hike in single-threaded performance (Conroe's is nice but not "everything-else-is-obsolete"nice). Dual-core will reach the mainstream next year but I doubt quad-core will be considered mainstream in less than 3 years, which is about the time when you'll want to upgrade anyway.

They are turning their backs on AMD because of the reviews, the benchmarks, and the prices on the new Core 2 Duo chips. People want value.

It is foolish(and this is from a guy with "fool" in his name, heh) to religiously follow only one brand for any computer component. Cpu's, videocards, HD's, whatever... parts are parts if they do what you need in the right price range.

Your 4400+ should last a good while longer but newer, faster and less expensive(at least what you paid) cpu's are on the horizon in the very near future. This is how it works in the computer game. Your old stuff always becomes worthless. My old P3-1Ghz used to be worth over a grand and I bet I couldn't even get $20 for it now, heh.

If you have a good graphic card with enough ram and all.

At stock: you should be fine in our games for atleast a yr.
If it can be oced to 5000-5500 class speeds: then you maybe ok even for the next 1.5yrs or so.

Value... haha... the processor price is going to be offset by the insane prices of the motherboard!

I am just saying that everyone compares a 1 year old proc to a proc that isn't even out yet... and AMD plans on cutting prices to compete anyhow... so your value statement goes right out the window!

Performance is going to go to Core 2 Duo, no doubt... but Value is a completely different ball game.

It's just as foolish to hold your breath in anticipation of the next tech advancement, since there is always one coming :).

I bought my 4400+ about ten months ago, and had zero expectation of still being on the top of the heap at this point.

Your limiting factor right now is the graphics card, and will be even more so in future games. No amount of cpu power will overcome that limitation.

I find that technology seems to be scaling much faster now, though.

i was looking over at the benchmarks on Tomshardware the other day and I'm getting a socket 939 CPU soon and putting money for a nice graphics card and more RAM. the difference between an Athlon 3500 and the fancy CPU's is 200fps vs 130fps. Not like my eyes will notice.

Conroe is a unique jump in performance. A 4400+ is still an extremely fast chip IMO, but I will be going conroe because I like unique jumps in performance (after ocing that is)

A conroe on water/good air at ~4ghz will be roughly double the speed of my current processor in many applications, and sort of like having 2x 8-9ghz P4's which is sweet, sweet, sweet

That CPU became outdated as soon as teh x2 4600+ was released. You'd better sell it off quick if you expect to get anything for it at all. Since you're such a respected senior member of this site, I'll help you out and do you a favor... I'll give you $40 for that CPU. Better take me up on that offer quick before it's worth even less.

The 4400+ will do fine in gaming for a while still... once you get to higher resolutions, most games are GPU limited still and rely much less on the processor. If you have OCed to FX speeds... you will be golden. Especially since most games haven't touched that second core yet :)

If you want to increase your perverbial "e-penis"... the Conroe will be latest and greatest! No doubt the thing will smoke like crazy. You figure that you will have to upgrade your MB, Memory and Proc tho... you have to ask yourself if the increase is worth it?

And as for Zap's offer... I will go $41, but I think you are rippin me off ;)

You are a very mean person so I raise it to $41.03 :D

This is what I was going to say. If your chip operates well for you now, it's not going to slow down just 'cuz C2D is on the market.

My 4800+ @ 2.5GHz is sweet and will remain sweet for a good while yet. I just can't imagine a situation where my CPU all the sudden feels like a dog for me.

your 4400 should with the right graphics cards have no problems running games for a while (in fact I can all but guarantee that your 7600gt will need to be replaced well before your 4400). That being said I am upgrading to conroe, but not for gaming purposes.
