How long to transfer 110Gb over USB 1.0?

Gb or GB? I will assume you mean GB (Gigabytes), since most data storage mediums are measured in this way.

USB1.0 is 10Mbps (10,000,000 bits per second). If we (optimistically) assume that all of this bandwidth is used to transfer the data, that is 10,000,000 / 8 ~= 1.5MB/sec. You have 110GB, or 110,000MB of data to transfer.

110,000MB / 1.5MB/sec. ~= 74,000 seconds. 74,000 seconds / 3,600 seconds/hour ~= 20.5 hours.

I'd say around 24 hours of transfer time. USB1.0 is not real fast.
 
it would be much much much much faster to just remove the Hd & put it into the other pc to transfer the files.
 
it would be much faster to write down the infomation by hand, and feed it to your computer

but matthias has it right, and thats only in theory, if you use the computer at the same time, that transfer rate will drop. just set it going and dont come back for a few days
 
No can do.....I'm sharing my MP3 collection with a girl I met the other day. Installing a HD in her rig seems a bit overkill. She'll have to live with the long transfer time from an external HD. And for 14,000 songs, I imagine it'll be worth the wait.

Thanks for the advice though.

It would be quicker to drive to a store, buy a USB2 card, come back, plug the HDD, and copy it then.

Either way, you are wrong. Honestly. Wrong. You should plug the HDD internally no question about it.

Assuming the drive is already in an external enclosure, it seems like an awful lot of work to take it out of the enclosure, put it in this girl's system (which might, for all we know, not even have another drive bay or free IDE cable for it), STILL need a good hour or two to transfer all the data, and then have to take it out of her system and put it back into the external enclosure.

IMO, just let it transfer overnight and pick the drive up the next day.
 
Exactly what I was thinking Matthias, I have no idea what her rig is and USB seems way easier than swapping the drive in and back to the external. It's only time that is at issue with the USB method and like I said, the payoff is easily worth the wait.

Because then he would have to bring his whole computer over there and not simply his HDD.

I agree with Matthias.

Plus LEDs statement could work to your advantage 😉.
