How long till 9800 PRO is obsolete?

Yea i kno theres next gen cards out and its obsolete now in some peoples eyes, but how long will it be before my sapphire 9800 PRO becomes unable to run modern games at medium quality. Medium being 1024x768 or similar with all the other textures set at medium no AA/AF.

awww i cud cry.... 🙁 6 months ago it was all "BUY 9800 PRO!!" "9800 PRO FOR GAMERS" "ITS THE BEST!!" bahhh i hate new technology, would like it if it didnt cost me money 🙁

if i were you (and had a little money), i woudl buy one of those nv silncers( on ebay there like 14 bucks nEW), then flash taht 9800 pro into a 9800XT!!!!.

Well, the 9800P wasn't exactly new six months ago, and new cards basically double performance every 18-24 months.

As for obsolesence, that really depends on your definition of playable framerates. As a Supreme Court Justice once noted, you'll know it when you see it. Personally, I think it'll hang at 30-60fps average for most of 2005.

no graphics card, even top of the line will last more than a year and still play new games running top settings especailly at high resolutions. i feel my 6800gt struggles in hl2 w/ 1680x1050 and i've only had it for a little more than a month.

My 9700 Pro is 2 years old and can play hl2 on high settings. Something is wrong with your 6800gt.

Well, I think it could last another year probably. All the serious new games won't be out till 2006. Games for 2005 will probably be on current engines, and since it can handle doom3 and source on medium fine, I can't imagine it being obsolete any time soon.

My laptop which has the mobility radeon 9700 with only 64 megs of Ram played HL-2 flawlessly at 1280x800 at medium settings. I think ati's last gen technology will be adequate for another year at least.

The 9800Pro 256bit memory will be a great card for a while. You may want to sell them off now though because I think the X800's are going to come down in price soon. Will make the 9800 a hard sell, that is, if you want to make some cash......

naw, i jus had high expectations goin from my 19" 1280x1024 all 16xaa and stuff to the 20" 1680x1050. i dont like when my fps drop to 40. my GTs fine a 12500 3d mark 03 score says the performance im getting is decent

Radeon 9800 pro is good till mid 2006.Easy.

Hell the 9600 pro still do the job for most games today( even doom 3 run good on it)

im playing counter strike source and doom 3 with my 9700 pro so...

BFG is using his own scale not the OP's "medium" settings. I belive BFG only runs games at 1600x1200 and up.

I had a 9700 Pro (Sapphire), but the thing was TERRIBLE. Consistently I got video errors until I gave up and bought a 9800 Pro a couple months ago.

If you have about $100 laying around, I suggest you quickly sell it while it is still worth over $100.
I had a R360 core 9800 Pro modded to XT, it gave me pretty good scores overall in UT2k4, Doom3, and HL2 but I noticed that at 1280x1024 with 4xAA on some games, it lags.

So I sold the card for $160, got the 6600GT for $205, only had to shell out $45 more and instantly boosted my gaming performance by 30-40% across the board.

The 9800 will last til end of year. Since games like AOEIII is most likely gonna run slow on the 9800pro.

OBSOLETE?

next year - '06 when DX 10 is released. 😛

the 6600GT and 6800 will ALSO be obsolete then 😉

Just a comment here...while it may be 'out of date' the card will run pretty much everything you throw at it most likely for at least 2 years more. I'm STILL using a GeForce 2 Pro. Given, I just purchased a totally new system and the 6600GT, but that Pro stopped playing things just w/in the last 6 months. And that's mostly because of memory issues. The entire thing is whether or not you HAVE to play at a certain resolution or have the graphics look perfect.

Just as an example, the GF2 runs the Sims 2 and WoW fine. Big thing being you don't KNOW what your missing I guess. (Both at 1024x768, wow at lowest qual. settings and Sims 2 at medium settings). So...depends on how much money you have 🙂.

Just the opinion of a poor grad student that can't upgrade his gear that often.

From now until you're no longer willing to use it because it doesn't meet your needs.

All hardware is obsolete in that length of time.

A 4600 will still do that. Actually my old 4600 will run doom3 in 10x7 at high settings with no aa/af, Far Cry in 10x7 at very high settings, again no aa/af. I haven't tried HL2 on it (it's in my htpc now; main rig has a 9800pro) but it should do fine there as well. Upgrading video cards is much more of a 'keeping up with the Joneses' thing, especially among techie circles like AT, than a necessity. With a minimum standard like 10x7 mq no aa/af, you can upgrade every 3-4 years, more if video cards pull a "cpu" in the coming years and slow down in their evolution.

Im going to have to call BS on this one. My 9800Pro struggles at times on med/high, but then i only have a p4 2GHz--could be the bottleneck.
