How long since you last (re)installed your operating system?

For me, running the command prompt systeminfo.exe yields

Original Install Date 11/08/2003

So this Windows XP install has been doing its thing for 5 years now. I think that would the date I moved from Windows 98 as I don't remember doing any reinstall.

(I know there's an Operating System forum but those e-penis things are always more fun in OT.)

i reinstalled XP probably twice a year since 03. i have reinstalled vista 32 ultimate maybe 5 times. and once vista 64.

reason is i either had the partitions getting too full (from not making them big enough at first) and had to repartition, or i just felt like reinstalling everything. i like having fresh installs to run on at least twice a yr.

also the last time i installed vista was when i got my new mobo and everything, i wanted to have a whole new system, then my WD drive dies that same day at night, so i had to use my 750gb seagata now to install vista and use as my storage drive at the same time.

Damn, I am almost on a yearly schedule for starting completely over, though I hit that schedule back in march and have yet to reinstall...
I am normally "fairly" nice to my computer and yet I still find it in need of the yearly wipe out, lol. We won't talk about the specs on my pos though...

The timing of this thread is ironic. Guess what I've got planned for tonight? Yep, reinstall XPSP3.

The load is about 6 months old but installing/deleting lots of different things seems to have taken it's toll. Response time is sluggish and login-to-clear-desktop time is abyssmal. Time for a wipe and reload.

Also happens that my Velociraptor came in two days ago. :D I'm gonna be positively FLYING after this reinstall.:D

I can't imagine how slow your system is, Denni. 5 years of built-up XP registry crud...you probably login, go make a sandwich and come back before it's ready, right?

8/23/2008. Moved from Windows Vista x86 to Windows Vista x64 when I got my upgrade disk in the mail.

I use my Fix-it Utilities or SystemSuite to clean, defrag and fix my registry regularly. Regular maintenance (defragging, proper uninstalling of programs no longer wanted, file cleanups) goes a long way into keeping a system speedy. The main thing slowing me doing is realtime virus & malware protection but I would not dream of turning these off nowadays, even if I image my C partition regularly also.

My vista install is at 1 day before requiring activation, and I've used slmgr the maximum number of times. So I either activate, or reinstall. I am leaning towards reinstalling but I'll make the decision later tonight.

Around 2 weeks ago; Vista Ultimate SP1 x86. Had it installed for six months. Firefox wasn't connecting to any websites when it first started up and after trying some things that didn't clear it up I figured it was time for a reinstall.

I don't even keep the same components long enough to go that long without a reformat.

Vista Ultimate x64 - last month. I usually reformat my HD and fresh install my OS once or twice a year.

I have changed much of my system (mobo, RAM, CPU, GPU, HDDs) two or three times since. XP is very forgiving in that respect.

Both systems: A couple months ago.

I hate it. Having to reinstall the latest drivers isnt too bad, but reinstalling all my favorite apps & games was a major pain.

Before that it had been about 3 years. XP is stable enough and if you can keep the spyware out there is no reason to keep reformatting over and over.

Late June 08, I wanted to change how my partitions were done. Not much of a point in reformatting with Vista 64 otherwise.

Desktop - initial install, Vista x64: Fall 2006.

Laptop - straight from factory, Windows XP - Fall 2004

Never needed to reinstall.

I made a couple of virtual XP machines on my Vista machine, though... :)
