How long should it take to rip a cd to mp3s?

I am following the chris myden guide using EAC and Lame, this is the first time I have done this and its estimating ~17 minutes for the cd. Is this normal?

It depends on the Digital Audio Extraction speed of your drive, the condition of the disc (since EAC slows down to read lightly damaged discs), the type of MP3 encoding (VBR is slower), and your CPU speed.

My music server is a Tualatin 1.3a with an Asus 40X CD (best DAE speed of its time), and it takes under 10 minutes to rip and encode an average CD.

at that bitrate you should use lossless FLAC not lossy MP3.

LAME --alt-preset standard is 128 kbps VBR and is better than radio
LAME --alt-preset extreme is 192 kbps VBR and is often pretty close to CD quality
LAME --alt-preset insane is 320 kbps CBR and is almost always indistinguisable from CD

512 kbps MP3 is pointless for lossy compression and won't even play on many portables.

How do I set it to encode at 192 VBR?

ins under file->compression options

takes me about 10 min to do a Cd ~15 songs at extreme settings
