how long should it take to encode a DVD using DVDShrink? UPDATE

for some reason i remember it taking about an hour, but recently its been taking about 3 hours per DVD, anyone have any suggestions on what i could check to see why its taking so long?

i did some tests on the dvd drive...

here is the first-

I did a test on my DVD drive using Performance Test program I found on www.download.com

well the DVD drive that came with my Dell 5100 Inspiron had stats of 2.2-2.3 Mbs per second while taking up 75-80% of the CPU

so I tried my once internal now external Sony DRU-500a which is connected via a USB port and it had stats of 2.6 Mbs per sec but only taking up 2.5-5% of the CPU

so the Sony external read faster while taking up 75% less CPU...

then i used nero and got this on reading 7.9 gig dvd

average read speed .92x, started at 1.71 and ended at 1.74x
cpu usage at 1x was 87%
seek times...random 111ms, 1/30 128ms...full 217ms
inreface burst rate = 1MB/s

i got an error when doing this test on my sony, so i will try again later

Hmm... when I set it to burn at 2.0x w/ deep analysis, it takes exactly an hour. Half hour for deep analysis/encoding, half hour to burn (IIRC).

I've got an Athlon XP 1700 with 1024MB of RAM. The movie, "Say Anything" required 21 minutes for a deep analysis.

If it is taking too long, your hard drive might be fragmented or not have enough space.

Isn't Deep Anylysis' dual pass really...always the better option (imo)? And yeh, usually takes (obviously depends on the original film and its extra's, and running time) about 1 to 1.5 hours including the burn (at 4X).

12mins....yeh right

12 is on the low side but is not unreasonable. Short comedy with no extras. Matrix took 24. His topic said how long to encode not how long to analyze, encode, and burn. If that is the case then I would agree with KnickNut3 and say about 1 hour.

i have 10 gigs free and just defragged my computer the other night

its really weird...

just tried running dvd-decrypter and that was saying it would take an hour to to process

Update your DVD-ROM firmware?

I assume you've tried different DVDs, in case one is scratched up and it takes more time to get all the information off of it.

I have a P4 3.2 EE, 74 Gig Raptor, 1 Gig of RAM and an 8X NEC 2500A (I use 4X media which only burns at 4X). It only seems to take about a half an hour but I have never timed it. I have this computer on a KVM and when I burn I don't pay attention to it and use another computer on the KVM to do whatever I need to do.

My p3-1.06ghz inspiron 8100 laptop with 512MB of RAM takes about 45 minutes to an hour do do the encode, then about the same again to burn it on 2.4x media (have a 4x external burner..but 2.4x media is MUCH cheaper).

Yeah, that's about what I get. Usually can get it down into the 45 min range, but can take up to an hour.

onlything i can think of is a couple of days bedore there was a windows update i believe...anyone know how to remove a windows update?

this really annoying...

also any way to test the speed information is being read from the drive?

Nero used to have some speed tests for the burners/cd-roms. Not sure if they still do.

If you know which windows update you installed, you can remove it from the "Add/Remove Software" section of the control panel.

My speeds, btw, weren't with "deep analysis", but stock/standard. Not sure personally what the deep analysis does.

Hmmm now I was trying to watch a dvd last night off the drive and it kept freezing for a second...I am thinking for some reason must be the read speeds as nothing else is slowed down, i will check nero when i get home.

You forgot to mention the time it takes to rip it too.
Deep analysis takes around 40mins for me.
My reader can only rip at 2x so it takes some time.
Burning at 2 - 2.4x depending on media.

SO a movie with 120 min play time will take 120/2(rip) + 40(analysis) + 120/2(burning) = 160 mins = 2 hours and 40 mins.
I say your numbers makes sense to me.
