the xyphoid (or xiphoid) process is the "Pope's Nose" on the chicken or turkey - it a cartilagnous
attachment to the bottom of the sternum. the rectus muscle inserts onto it. it can calcifify later in life, become an
"outie" later in life and sort of poke up into the air. I have seen cases where the xyphoid has been traumatized, and a bar of calcium
begins to form from it, which extends downwards from it towards the umbilicus.
if someone had a 3 inch xyphoid - i guess i would have to agree that that is most unusual.
