Depends on the car. It's hard to make a blanket statement about oil life.
I would hazard to gues that if you don't push your car that hard, and it's not an extreme usage engine (ie. non-watercooled turbocharged), the oil itself will be good for well over 10k miles.
This is not to say that your oil filter will be good for this long, or that you won't have gas/water/coolant or anything else leaking into your oil and diluting it.

99% of normal driving autos will do just fine with 8k-10k mile oil changes with synthetic oil and 5k-7k with conventional oil. Why waste oil and money?

2005 accord, its just the recommended... my cousin who's a mechanic says tis okay to use 5w-30 tho...
It's almost always safe to use a slightly heavier oil, but it can make the car a bit harder to start and very slightly decrease your fuel economy.
If the manual calls for 5w20, I'd use it...you're just wasting fuel otherwise. But make sure that's not just the cold-weather grade.
I remember my old Golf (4cyl 8V) took 20W50. The thing was a tractor. Very disappointing performance and fuel economy, after coming from 16V DOHC Japanese engines.

what are the top oil filters avaiable for easy purchase @ autozone, strauss, pepboys? or online if its still within the same price
Purolator Pure One and Mobil 1 are both excellent filters. K&N makes one that has slightly better flow, slightly less filtration, but is still very good.
I guess it depends on the car. If you have a Ford, the Motorcraft filters are actually very good too, and cheap.

I had picked up the K&N first, but I took them both out of the package and they were IDENTICAL. Obviously I didn't tear them apart, but they had the same internal and external hole patterns, the same stampings on the bottom cap, the same bypass mechanism, and the filter media looked the same at least.
The M1 was 2$ cheaper, so I got that one.
The K&N may have had a more robust outer casing, but it was hard to tell.

I've seen a whole row of them taken apart, and the top 4 of about 20 (all about the same) were GM/Delco, Ford/Motorcraft, Mopar, and Fram HP.
This was a few years back, but nothing has changed, other than a few more high-quality filters available besides the Fram HP. (Mobil1, etc.)
So if you have reasonable access to a Honda dealer, just buy the factory filter. Can't go wrong with it, and you're just pissing money away to buy any filter that's really expensive.
Nobody has oil-related failures anymore, unless it's caused by not changing it.

I'm sure it could go 10K+ w/o any issues...but I use Mobil 1 and still change it every 5K miles. Why? Because it's cheap, easy, and I want my truck to last 15+ years, and changing oil regularly is one of the best ways to do that.

That's a rediculous statement to make. Sure, under most driving conditions and Mobil 1, todays engine can go 15K miles between changes, but that doesn't mean you should. To say there there are no other factors (road conditions, filter, time of year,etc) that affect the quality of the oil is ignorant. Changing every 5k, no matter how good the oil is, is beneficial to the life of your engine.
