How long is FPS supposed to be?

I read some reviews on FPS and they always say that a 10 hours game is short. I have to question that. How long are they usually? What games set this trend of having to be more than ten hours? I come from console games - only starting to get into PC games at around 2000. Most console games are possible to beat in way under ten hours. 3-5 hours are most with some maybe reaching 10; unless you're talking about an RPG, then that's something different.

So far I've beaten:

Rainbow Six(not too sure I've beaten it, but was very near the end)
Half-Life and all expansions
Medal of Honor and all expansions
Unreal II
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Halo(console version only, I think they said this game was about 10 hours)

So which one if any of these would be more than 10 hours, or a game that isn't short? Half-Life was kinda long.

In my experience most FPSes generally tend to be around 8-10 hours with the longer ones like Deus Ex being 12-15 hours.

Some people finish them earlier but you'll find those people just race through the game and don't get fully involved with it.

Sounds like you are coming from one of Sony's systems, they target small child level skills, or the mainstream if you prefer 😉

FPSs tend to be a lot shorter then other genres, although 10 hours is too short even for them. You play a game like CivIII or Morrowind and you are talking 100+ hours your first play through more then likely(if you get into them heavily you can drop 200-300hours without much trouble). Adventure games, RPGs, decent racing games, decent platformers, RTSs, pretty much every genre besides FPSs tend to be considerably longer then ten hours to completion.

Half-Life was a decent length compared to the others you listed, but even it wasn't exactly a marathon game. JKII will likely take you a lot longer then 10 hours to beat, NOLF/NOLF2 also. Metroid Prime runs most people 20-30hours(although that isn't on the PC unfortunately) also.

Of all the Playstation and PC games I?ve played, Tomb Raider 4 is the longest followed by Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix.

SOF II: DH is like the Energizer Bunny ? it just keeps going and going and going. A few lame FMV?s and parts but generally a very good FPS. Did I say very long.

CoD took about 4 hours to beat, that's short as far as I'm concerned. RtCW took me about 8 hours and that's average. SoF2 took a long time, I don't know how long but it is definitely the longest FPS I have ever finished.

No way, someone who has never played CoD can beat it in four hours. Thats overkill.

We should create a seperate "Gaming Forum" and VAIN can be the mascot.

CoD was suprisingly short. I haven't played many FPS lately, but it came for free with my card and I couldn't believe that it was over so soon.

Ya it sux when that happens, then you have to go looking for mods to make the game last longer. I know the routine all too well. Its fun if there are mods but when there arent then its depressing. I dont own the game but want it so bad and maybe its fun to play over and over.

I can't stand Sony. That is Nintendo's area.

I haven't beat COD yet, but I'm in progress. One thing about it is that the game is so much fun to play that I can play the first level over and over, haven't gotten past that yet, not because of difficulty issues. I just keep going back, I will go forward one day.

What's Nintendo's area? The difficulty level comment? I have all the current gen consoles with at least two of all except the PS2(2 GBAs, 2 XBox, 3 GameCubes- four kids and a wife and everyone games) and the titles for the PS2 are hands down the easiest overall, it's not even close. There is more challenge on any one of the later levels of SMS then there is in all of GTA3 for example 🙂

Nintendo occasionaly seriously drops the ball and makes a Sony esque game with no challenge, ZWW springs quickly to mind, but overall they offer considerably more challenge then the titles that hit Sony's consoles. It isn't really an age thing, although I think of it that way, its mainly that mainstream gamers do not have close to comparable skills as the geeks that spend twenty hours plus a week gaming and if you want to cater to them that must be considered.

That's why you never play on the easiest difficulty setting to start out with. I always start on the middle or hard.

CoD took 6 hours max (on the middle difficulty levels)
Deus Ex 2 took about 10 hours.
Deus Ex was ~18 IIRC.
Unreal 2 was about 6 hours.
HL took ages, never totally finished it, but I reckon I'd done maybe 10~15 hours in. Had got past the monster in the pit that can hear you, and the first Gargantuan, can't remember exactly where I was though.

SW Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is proving to be rather long. I've probably put about 15hrs into it so far, and I might only be 70% of the way through. Kyle has died numerous times though. Heck, make that "many many times". I take awhile to adapt to a new game fully. If I play it through twice fully, then I've usually got the hang of it.

Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force - quick game, which can probably be finished in one or two sittings. Very quick game.

Half Life: Long game. But, like Outcast, not dull.

Unfortunately, when I bought CoD someone I know told me it was extremely difficult even on the easiest setting. So the first time I played it I played it on easy. I was like wtf man, you must suck if that's extremely difficult. But after beating it on easy I went back and beat it on hard but I played all the missions 2 or 3 times just cuz they were so fun.

As far as difficulty level, Idk, but Nintendo is obviously marketed towards kids, nah I won't say that, they market it as a fun machine and that's exactly what it is. PS2 blows goats, although they house some of my favorite series such as Silent Hill. XBOX had its games and then sort of started to slide.

I know, but I wanted to post it here.

Would you be the mascot? 😛

IMHO, multiplayer games are taking over single player games. I know some of us like storylines, me included. Most likely because they can't make as much money because of groups like Deviance. This is why CoD is short.

Did you play it on the lowest difficulty level or something? Did you kil all of the enemies or did you just race past them?

It's short but not that short.

So has anybody finished HALO for pc in 10-15 hrs in the most difficult level?

Either I'm too stupid or some of you are full of BS. 😀
Games like HL,HALO,DEUS EX etc, in the most difficult level are way too time consuming.
Unless you play at "3-5yrs old" level 😛
