I just found a check that a guy wrote for me and it's dated from december last year! Anyone know how long checks are good for? It's a check for wells fargo if that helps. Thanks.
checks are staledated past 6 months. Though if the checkwriter is ok with it you can probably still cash it. I used to be a teller and we rarely checked that.
Technically a check is good forever. If there is an expiration date on it, you should be able to contact the issuer for a new check. If money is owed they cannot technically expire it. If there is no exp. date on it, it is fair game. Now whether the person still has enough money in the account to cover it.....well that is another thread......
Wells Fargo will used to cash for a year and is now at six months, but the way it works is that if the person who wrote the check will allow it to be cashed, it will go through regardless of age. Just take it to the bank and see what happens.
I think each institution has its own policy. Generally one year but some are shorter. Take it to a Wells Fargo branch and see if they will cash it. Bet they do if the account is active.
