How long has your Zen/iPod/iRiver or other lasted?

I've been thinking about getting a hard disk based mp3 player or iPod but I'm wondering how long these things can be expected to last. The reviews I have read are usually written within the first month the writer owned their player. Reviews often say things like "this is my fourth player so I know what I'm talking about". Given that these players haven't been on the market that many years I'm concerned about dropping US$200-300 bucks and spending all that time converting my CDs over only to have to do it all again in a short time. So I'd like to hear folks experiences. Please list the make, model, and how long it lasted until it dies or if it is still going strong, how long you've had the player. Also some indication of how often you use the player would also be helpful. Thanks.

I'm not going to add a poll since it wouldn't be all that meaningful since I'm interested in learning how each model of player fares.

I had a Zen Micro die on me after just under three months. I took it back to Walmart and exchanged it for another one, which died after five days. At that point I was sick of the player anyway, so I got my money back and went to Best Buy and bought an iPod. Haven't had a single problem with it and I love it 🙂

Had a Dell DJ 15GB for a year. Worked great. I decided I would rather have an iPod so I sold the DJ to start the iPod fund, but the DJ alway worked great for me.

I listen to it in the car every day on the way to and from work and I listen at my desk at work. Ocasionally when I get on the treadmill, I listen to it on there, but that's really pretty rare.

I've got a 3rd Gen 15 gig iPod that I bought about a week after that model came out. Used it about 4 hours every day up until about 3 months ago. Been dropped on concrete a few times. Still runs like a champ including the battery. I've now got a 4th gen with about 3 months of use on it that's got about the same amount of daily run time and works perfectly as well. *knock on wood* I <3 my iPods.

My Rio Karma lasted 2.5 years. I'd still be using it if I didn't bust the headphone jack. Hard drive is still fine. I've had a Toshiba Gigabeat F20 as a replacement for about 6 months that's worked great.

What do people with ipods do about the the ear buds? I find the apple ear buds to be incredibly uncomfortable. But when I am out and about, I don't exactly want dj style headphones, either. I'd like a better designed ear bud headphone, if possible.

Any hard drive based mp3 player will die eventually so you need to have your music backed up. I'm in the process of converting all my CDs now. When I'm done I'll have them on my pc's hard drive + backup dvds.

Depends on how much you want to spend. Headfi.org and I like the Koss KSC75 (KC35 replacement). It's only $20 at Circuit City and sounds like a $100 headphone. Otherwise, if you must get an ear bud, go with Sennheiser's MX series. They are a bit more expensive though.

I have an iRiver H320 20GB that I've been using for 1 year... still kicking and I love this little device. Die iPods! 😛

I've had my 40 gig zen for about 2 years now. It's been with me from -35 on Mt. Elbrus in russia to 100 degree rainy weather on kilimanjaro. Not to mention it was stolen by a renegade monkey for a short bit on a safari in tanzania, africa. I've yet to have a problem with it......

I've had a 20gb Dell DJ for probably 2 years now. Works fine, don't plan on getting another one till this dies... That could be a while.

I have a creative zen micro and use it for abot 2-3 hours a day. Most of the time its used for walking or jogging and has not had a single problem in the 6 months that i have had it.

My flash players have always lasted until they got stolen. One from the gym, one from work. 3rd I still have....going strong after 8 months, but again, flash player by ril.

I've dropped my 3rd GEN iPod while running on a treadmill. It landed on the belt, and was SHOT backwards right into a metal pole. It still works.
On top of that, I've dropped it from heights of 10 ft or more AT LEAST 15 times.

I run with it alot, and depending on how I hold the iPod, its skips SOMETIMES. Like, if I run with it in my hand, it doesn't skip, but if I keep it in my pocket, it will after about 20-30 min. You can always buy one of those armband things for that though, and problem solved.

I got in the Winter of 04' and it's still tickin.

I've had my 3rd Gen ipod 20GB for almost 2 years now...

Works great, I use it almost every day and I often use it quite a bit for removable storage (transferring stuff between my parents house and apartment)

I've had a Nomad Zen Xtra for about two years now. Every day at work for a full eight hours, for forty hours a week, two years and still going strong.

I did have a problem once in between that made me have to format and put my music back on, but it worked fine and has worked since then without any problems.

Worth every penny.

I have had my Creative Zen Micro for abotu a year now, never had any problems with it, my girlfriend has also had hers about a year too. Both of them are going strong. Sometimes mine takes a lil while to turn on, but other than that, no problems, and i love it

Well my 20 gig Archos Jukebox Recorder has been used just about every day since I got it in the fall of 2002. Battery life sucks. I charge them every day. When they are weak it'll fail to load a song or boot and starts going *rasp* *click* *rasp* *click* .... But it always plays gapless music once you give it sufficient power. I'll wait till it dies to replace it.
