How long does it take you to pay for stuff?

I have a job at zaxby's (first job; 5.75/hour) and I thought I'd have so much money after taking the job on... Well, now I walk down isles at stores and see stuff like "This game for $50" then I realize, it takes me almost 10 hours of hard work, cooking chicken, buttering bread, closing shop, just to pay for a video game. Then I walk on, and keep my $50. It wasn't so bad when I was spending mommy and daddy's money, but now, it's all so different... Ofcourse, mom and dad make about 10x more than I do :/

I'm confused about your original question...
Are you asking how much $ we make an hour? Or how much we save up to make a big purchase? Or how long we wait to pay off our tab in a bar?

You'll find that your opinions of money change quite a bit in the next few years...

It gets MUCH harder to waste money when YOU have to earn it, but you'll also find that you make smarter choices with it as well...

Nothing wrong with buying that game, but you might consider investing a bit of time getting it cheaper... Check the FS forums, or eBay... If you can get it for $30, you just saved yourself about 2.8 hours of work... :D

What $5.75 an hour????!?!? That's PAINFULLY low

What state ur from? Minimum wage in Mass. is $6.50, and that means 15-16 yr olds get about $7 an hour as a first job..

are u kidding me? you can beg for money and make more than that an hour

~andy <come to think of it, beggars make LOTS of money in major cities.. I heard like, $20-30 an hour>

[edit]
What do I do? I make $10 an hour neffing here @ ATOT.. I'm a comp lab technitian @ my college library :D

lol, I'm looking for a new job, 'jus that zaxby's is right next door (use no gas or car to get there) so that actually saves a dime or two :p

No other better jobs ANYWHERE :(

Not to mention, I'll have to make car payments soon too... and insurance....err...and gas money....

Min. wage in georgia is like 5.25 or something.... :/

Yea, once you start having to pay for the car, you'll find that quickly eats up all your money if you're not careful...

Ask your insurance company what your rates will do if you get a ticket... Then think about that any time you think about speeding... For a male under 18, that is a very sobering thought when YOU'RE the one paying for it. :D

How do people who make minimum wage in the US manage to pay rent + food + bills? That's crazy low. What's an average rent for a 1-bedroom apartment?

I'm exactly the opposite now. Any store I walk into I will walk out of without something or it wasn't worth my time. I will FIND something worth buying just to buy it.

True. Once visa was no longer funding my computer habits and I had a job I promptly realized that throwing money into the bottomless tech pit was silly. Since I've not wasted cash nearly like how i used to, even though I have more of it.

skace I hate you ;P

Some people find places to live for $2 a month :/ But they're whores and have sex with the attendants every night, haha...

Dunno, thank god my mom and dad make $50,000/year+ each :/

Let's see... my friend brandon's family is something like this:

7 people living; 2 sisters, a brother, brandon, a mom, another sister w/ child.
$200/month for their trailor w/ water and power
no phone
no internet
only brandon and the older sister has a job
buy lots of food
the "brother" is disabled and is confined to his room...

Sad state of affairs...

Christ, I still do that for a $50 game, and I make over 4x per hour what you do.

I'm cheap.

Would you think twice about spending $8 for a two hour movie?

If not, you might give that game more thought, as it will most likely give you at least 20 hours of play time.

I would :) After food and two movie tickets a couple can spend nearly $500 dollars these days to see a movie in theaters. Thats why I hardly ever go!

you know what's worse... starting to get CC's... hehe.. then it's "i'll pay it when i get my paycheck..." but then you say that for all the little things you buy... boom, it all adds up and you got a bill to pay :(

Unfortunately, i only get $6/hr on an on campus job (phone support for internet connection)... but i'm not complaining.. i sit there doing nothing (can study and get paid, why not). It was busy in the begining of the year.. but only a couple weeks :)

but yeah, i'd say try looking for another job, you should be getting more than that...

What the hell kind of restraunt and movie theaters do you go to? When my GF and I go out to our fav. restraunt it costs a little over $20, and it's about $16 for us to go to the movie. Add $10 for popcorn and candy and a drink and you're still not over $100, let alone $500.

Anyway, to answer the original question, I don't really buy things for myself anymore. Now I spend $400/month on rent, $200/month on car insurance, $45/month just for my local phone, $45/month for cable internet access, $35/month for electricity, bags of money on food, $25/month on laundry, more bags of money on gas...it's amazing that I manage to break even.
Things will improve greatly in a month though, my pay goes up $4/hour.
And if the government wasn't taking 1/3 of my paycheck, I'd be rolling in the dough. :p

Geez, when I got my first job 12 years ago, the pay came to $3.75 an hour. Know how long it takes to earn $100 that way? And back then, a decent PC cost about $2000 minimum.

But the tides have changed. I'll buy any sub-$100 item without much thought. The last item I had to plan and budget for was my Nikon Coolpix 995 setup, which cost a little over $1000 all together. But just last week, I bought a used TB Santa Cruz ($50), GTS-V ($65), 3 shirts at Pac Sun ($68), all just "spur of the moment" purchases. You have to get something back in exchange for working 40+ hours a week without an extended break or sabbatical. I still frown at the reality that I'll never have a whole month or so off (aside from an involuntary layoff) from now until retirement.
