How long does it take to install the iPod software and copy music over to it?

It should have come with an adaptor you can plug into wall, or if it'sconnected to computer, it charges as well

Retail boxed iPods come with an AC adaptor and firewire, I believe. Not sure if you can charge it in the dock or not.

But to use the firewire, the computer does need to be on.

If you're using the dock and firewire to charge it the computer has to be on. Otherwise plug the firewire cable into the ac adapter and leave it off the dock. Of get the usb2/firewire cable and then you can connect it to the pc via usb2 and to the ac adapter via firewire so it charges on or off

No drivers or anything are needed?

ephpod takes care of it?

Do I need to tag all the files or will it take untagged ones as well

First off, EphPod is the best PC iPod software, not MusicMatch or whatever comes with it. It's freeware, terrific program.

20 minutes to get it installed, become familiar with it, and move over some tunes. Of course the iPod doesn't come charged so you'll need to have it plugged in to do anything.

Actually I may be wrong you may have to install one program to make it format for pc......don't listen to me I'm not sure now 😀

You will to have all your mp3s tagged though, I like tag & rename for that

Ephpod will read your tags and use them on the iPod. Make sure all your stuff is tagged decently, or you will have a hell of a time finding stuff. Tag and Rename should help you out.

If you buy a PC iPod, you don't need to format it. If you buy a Mac iPod, then you will need to download a utility to format it for PC use... I do not recall if EphPod will do this or not. Just do a google search on formatting iPod though.

Okay, well.. PC iPod, I had someone plug it in for me, it's charging now.

Have a car charger... as long as it has enough charge to copy the data over in four hours time then it should work.

Have an iTrip to to play through car stereo.. I know the quality is not the best right now it's all I have.

I have a 10 hour drive ahead of me and about a half hour window between getting home, getting music on iPod, then getting back in my car to start driving again.

How fesible is it to install iTrip software, install ephpod, and then copy over a bunch of music in 30 minute time?

3rd gen ipods are not platform specific, they're just an ipod, they become either mac or pc depending on which you plug it into. I just don't know if the ipod's firmware controls this or the drivers.
