In Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu. Just out of curiosity, how long does it usually take? Say with one class a week? Also, how exactly are belts earned? Do you have to demonstrate knowledge of certain things? Or defeat someone of higher rank?

When I took it, it was up the "Master". He said too many martial studios make you pay for the belt. He said you have to earn it. He told me through my progress and how I grappled with other guys.

But dam work got in the way. It was a lot fun though.

Depends on the martial art and the dojo.

Some martial arts are very difficult to advance in, and different dojos/masters promote their students at different rates.

Ballpark figure? 2-3 years with constant dedication.

This begs the question, why do you want to just get a black belt?

If you're not serious about a martial art (judging by how little time you're willing to devote) then the "accomplishment" factor isn't there. I suspect you just want verbal ammo to use against the bully taking your lunch money. :)

1 class a week? Probably never.

The last two places i've practiced at, a neighbor that showed me Northern Temple Shaolin and a school down the road that taught BJJ as part of their ground defense (they had karate as regular), neither had belts or ranks. Of course with my kung fu master, it was just me and him pretty much for the 3 years... though on and off there were other people, nobody ever stayed longer than a month or so though. And with the BJJ class, it was small... only about 2-6 people each time.

not long. of course the majority of 3 month black belts will get their asses kicked by 2 yr orange belts in more disciplined schools.

It's just a stupid gimmick these days. If you see ads stating that you'll get a black belt in x amount of time, avoid the school at all cost. Instead try something that either doesn't use belts (some types of kung fu) or emphasizes physical skills. The local jujitsu place breeds some hard-core mofos. ALl of their ads read: the fight club of long island. People sustain lots of injuries there-

In BJJ, it will probably take 10+ years to get a black belt. The guy I just bought my house from is a brown belt and he's been taking it for 9 years. He is a karate instructor but he says he spends most of his time doing BJJ. He probably goes 5 days a week for at least 3 hours and he's been doing it for 9 years. When I took BJJ, they just promoted someone to black belt and he took it for about 12 years.

i agree, 10 years + for a black belt. other martial arts (karate, judo, taekwondo) seem to give out black belts rather fast these days...all about the $$ i guess.

depends on whos teaching

depends on how hard you train

depends on how often you train

depends on the style

depends on the schools philosophy of testing

depends on you as an individual and how you pick things up

as a general rule though, if you're just in it for hte belt, you shouldn't be in it at all

I took karate for a while (1 1/2 years), never got past blue (just after orange). I quit when I realized that the instructor was just keeping me around for an extra punching bag. Every time he wanted to demonstrate a new technique, I ended up across the room, on my back, flat on my face or in a painful nerve hold.

It also depends upon the country you're in. In Korea they move you much faster. You can get your first black belt in taekwondo after one year of daily training. It's no big deal and many men get that during their military service. However, you only learn 7 or 8 routines in that time. Your second belt you can get in about a year and a half more. The third belt takes a couple more years, by which time you are starting to break boards and are considered truly advanced.

I can see most people here no nothing about the "Belt" In any version of martial arts Belts are ALL
decided by the "Dojo" Some use 6-8 different colors and some use "Degrees" Example Yellow belt 2nd degree
all the way up to Black belt 8th degree or some places the 9th Degree Black Belt. Also heres the important part
you may earn a black belt at a certain dojo BUT if you decide to transfer to another the "Sensei" May not accept
the Belt and start you at a lower belt maybe even "White" which is the first belt you get at ANY dojo.

As for time it varies from dojo to dojo, It may take years. It all depends how dedicated you are to the ART.
My Son is only 6 years old and has been taking martial arts for 2 years and is a 1st Degree ORANGE Belt. He
went from White to Yellow to Yellow 2nd Degree to NOW Orange Belt, He will start competing soon.

You do not get into martial arts to learn how to hurt people but to defend yourself and SELF CONTROL meaning
I Know I can kick his ass but why prove it unless he hits me first :D

If you really want to learn if you can only spare 1 night a week that is fine just concentrate and take it very seriously
you will enjoy the experiance it gets really fun when you start SPARING.

As for moving up in rank after the session you get tested the session may last 12-20 weeks depending on the dojo
if you know your moves and test well you move up.

Most american dojo's teach Karate or Tae Kwon do or a Form of it.

Brazillian Ju-Jitsu is different though.

There are no tests to advance. The senseis just give you a new belt when they think you are ready.
