I've heard enough claims from people thinking how fast their hard disks are, like 33MB/s or 66MB/s. I'm far away from everyone else's performance.

Let's do a real life test.

1. First, find a large file in the range of a few hundred megabyes.
2. Copy it to the same drive under another directory.
3. Time it
4. Post your PC config, the size of file and the time it took.

Mine:

Duron 800, Win2000, 128MB ram, Maxtor 8.4GB UDMA33
Copied file 140MB, time took: 2'8"

That should take only 140/33/2=2-3 seconds on your "33MB/s" hard disk, shouldn't it?

33 66 and 100 are max rates. On a RAID configuration. You'll probably never even get close to 100 with IDE drives.

SCSI I think can reach 60-80mb/s though.

Your drive will probably peak between 20-25mb/s I think.. I could know nothing about what I'm talking about though. :)

It took me 20+ seconds to copy a 140MB file on my Maxtor 40GB HD.

I've got an ASUS KX-133, Athlon(A) 750mhz and 256MB of RAM.

I moved around some 212mb Jackass episodes on my slave drive. This drive does nothing but hold my mp3s and movies and stuff. It's a maxtor 60 gig diamondmax plus 5400rpms. Took about 2 seconds...

I should note that single large files are easier to move compared with lots of little files.
