How Long Does it Take Google Search to Update?

When I type my name into Google, I see links to my school website, where I mentioned my name. On one of the pages in the site, I completely removed all reference to my name, yet I still see this page displayed in the search. On another page, I tagged my own name several times and re-named the page so that my name was the title, in order to try to push that particular page to the top of the search results. Thus far, I do not see any changes in the search results. In the little summary for the webpage where I removed my name completely, it still shows my name in the summary. It hasn't updated yet. How long does it take to update? I want to create an online version of my resume and make it so that it is the first result retrieved when someone types my name into Google.

Is your new resume page linked to anything? Google can't find free floating pages, it has to follow links.

Is that entirely how Google works? From finding keywords on pages that are linked to it? What about tags and the title of the page? Does that influence the search results?

I'm noticing something very odd. Now, when I use Google and Firefox, my website is listed as #1 in the results as I want it to.

However, when I use Google in Chrome, my website is further down in the results. Why would this be?

I've found it can be anything from a few hours (for bigger popular sites) to a few days (for medium sites) to weeks (for smaller sites).

For example, it's happen to me multiple times where I post a thread on a forum, then google something related and actually find my own thread that I just posted.

On my site iceteks.com, which is not really that big, if I link something on the home page it usually gets added to google within a few days. I don't know if maybe it goes by the google rank or what, but I'm sure they have a system.

This is because google stores cookies when you search and they rank higher what you've clicked on based on your visiting methods. Clear cache / cookies on original browser and it will no longer be first.

How do you clear the cache/cookies in Chrome?

EDIT: nm, I got it.

use google webmaster tools and you can submit pages or remove them from google if you own the domain. If you have a unique name like my own, you don't need any links to get top spot, just submit the single page.
