Its been almost 48 hours since I changed the name server information on my domain name control panel so I could have a new company host my web site. I have already deleted my account with the old company (Hypermart), unfortunately www.sbyers.com still yields the old IP address and goes to the old hypermart site (which now just says it can't be found..)

Am I doing something wrong here or does it really take this long for these changes to be effective? In the mean while I'm losing all my email....

www.sbyers.com

New IP should be: 216.204.111.2 (or something similar)

Old IP was: 66.150.0.166

Where does it take you?

This is the placeholder for domain sbyers.com. If you see this page after uploading site content you probably have not replaced the index.html file.

It resolves to the new address for me, but I believe it can take up to two days for DNS info to propagate.

It already updated to my ISP's DNS servers. This is what nslookup gets me

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: sbyers.com
Address: 216.204.111.2
Aliases: www.sbyers.com

it'll take longer for you because you've been to the site already, so it's been cached by your DNS servers. we probably haven't, so our copies are fresh and new.

interesting... so because I've visited my own site I'm stuck out in the cold... lol

is this at the ISP level I assume so that restarting my proxy in the basement wouldn't help things?

change your DNS to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2..

the refresh rate for DNS is based on TTL (Time to Live). In most cases its set at 24 hrs, important dns servers are set 12 hrs.. those IP's i gave are set for 6 hrs.

in your tcp/ip change your dns to those two numbers.. reboot and your set.

If I type in the IP I get a different "Default PLESK Page" and I haven't been able to connect to the site with Front Page using just the IP either...

I can connect with FTP and I do know that deftron is repeating what the main page should say.... wierd how when I type the IP in IE I get something different

<< Thanks Good Guy! I was just looking to borrow the use of someone else's DNS servers... >>

That's GTE's dns servers that my brother's company controls.. hasnt been down in ages.. they are the fastest dns servers on the west coast i am told. I get a resolution in less than 10 seconds all day.

cool... I just changed the DNS servers on all the computers in the house

Now if only my ISP's email server could resolve IP's correctly so I could send emails with the new site name we'd be all set :)
