Got a new Kenmore Elite (made by frigidare) refrigerator from sears less than a year ago and Ive been noticing that food goes bad and moldy within a week. my mom has a semi new Kenmore (made by whirlpool) and food lasts much longer in there. My mom's fridge is set to the recommended setting while Ive set mine to two levels colder than the midway recommended setting. But still that doesnt help.

Maybe my mom's fridge is a super fridge and I have skewed expectations. How long does prepared food last in your fridge?

Turn on your Humidity control.

Make sure your freezer is properly set too - so its really cold, but not frosting.

Get a separate thermometer to ensure that your refrigerator is at the proper temps. Should be 37F for the fridge and 0F for the freezer.

dont think this fridge has humidity control? gotta check the manual
unless you're taking about the vegetable drawers

just put one in there

Get a thermometer that also records the minimum and maximum temp ($8 at walmart). The freezer defrost cycle could be malfunctioning causing the fridge temps to occasionally get to high.

Check in multiple locations in the fridge.

Now tell us what it says.

40 right now. min was 36.1. There is no frost buildup inside the freezer

OK, so your fridge is not set cold enough. Turn the setting control down until it will maintain 37 F or less most of the time, as long as it does not go below 32 F. My procedure without a thermometer was to turn it down until a few things started to freeze overnight, then turn it back up a bit to eliminate the freezing. If anything that may make it too cold - say, 34 F instead of 37 - but the food sure lasts that way.

Strange.

Temperature should affect that stuff the most. That was going to be my suggestion. Have you actually measured the temperatures in the fridges? Maybe hers is actually colder.
