I had a old 1993 Dell 15" monitor capable of 1024x768 (very good in those days!) - it's still running in the 1.2GHz Duron rig I donated to a family I know. Now, that might not be the case for all CRTs, but I expect quality ones should last at least a decade. Just don't buy refurbed for sure - I bought a 17" Sony Trinitron refurbed in 1997 only to have it die in late 1999 - I bought my 15" Samsung LCD and haven't had a problem since :)

Kind of a coincidence that this thread popped up when my monitor died. It just went purple! Everything has a purple tint and I cant do anything about it. Once in a while it would turn a shade of cyan then turn reddish then go back to normal after a few seconds. Now its stuck purple. I think it's dead :(. 17" Compaq 1725. 6 years and 9 months (bought August 13th, 1998). Everest reports that the Manufacture Date is Week 18 / 1997. Where can I get a nice 19" NEC/Mitsubishi for gaming? :)

what about LCD lifetimes?

Predominately determined by the backlighting.

Most CCFL backlights have a lifespan of 10-50k hours.

They will last longer if driven at lower levels.

Life is considered over when output drops to 50% of original.

I had a 19" trinitron that lasted about 5 years. It died due to internal electrical arching which resulted in smoke comming out the back one day, not to mention some crazy distortions and crackling prior to its death.

All generalizations are false, . . . including this one. (Mark TWain) :)

I've got the that same 21" Dell. For being 5 years old, it still looks awesome.

Dunno, it probably depends. My oldest is a twelve year old, 13" no-namer which works fine aside from the fact everything is ultra-bright. The next is a ten year old, a 13" Apple which is in perfect condition. Then there's two ViewSonic A90s which are five years old. The first is excellent but the second will sometimes not turn on and make a humming noise. After that there's a four year old 21" Sony which has never even flickered before. The two most recent are one year old Viewsonic E90fbs which, of course, have no problems either.

Looks like my Sony Trinitron monitor bit the dust and went south exactly when it was exactly that old. That's okay, now I've got a Dell wide screen LCD and a NEC/Mitsubishi 19" CRT to replace that relic;).

I'd say 10 to 20 years life on a CRT.

I still have a 17inch that was made in 95.
I gave away a 13inch that was made in 86 ... the person who I gave it to said it's still running.
I had an 8 year old 14inch die on me when I was in college, otherwise, all of my other CRT's Still Run OK.
