How long do eggs last?

I have a half carton of eggs that I got a few days before Christmas in the fridge. I want to make brownies and the expiration date on them is "Jan /" What the hell does that mean?

Do eggs typically last a few days or a few weeks or?? I might just go for it because it's freezing outside and I don't want to get into my cold truck just to get stupid eggs...

If I decide to use them and don't return, that means I died and somebody can have my puter.

Sweet - my fridge was super cold the other day...my milk had ice crystals in it. The colder than normal temps probably helped prolong their life. I'll go for it and make my girlfriend try them first 🙂

This is a good rule of thumb:

Fill a large bowl or pan with water. Place the eggs in the water. If they lay on the bottom they are good. If they float, they are bad.

Although it may not be 100% accurate, I've broken open some that floated & you would definitely not want to use them.

On the other hand, the ones I used were always fine.

I was just pointing something out. Honestly, I have no idea if the test is accurate or not. I'll take Viper GTS's word though, I'm sure he knows what he's talking about.

Edit: I didn't realize how long that quote was going to be, sorry.....

No I was just saying that. It wasn't to cut you.

I'm very sure they are fine if you have kept them in the fridge. I had 5 dozen eggs in the fridge and they lasted for about a month until they were gone.

Why would eggs have a reduced weight when spoiled?

Maybe a gas is release as they decompose and if you leave them for a REALLY long time they'll float in the air!
