After you finished college, how long did you rent until purchasing a house? If you didn't go to college, how long did you rent on your own before buying?

I'm curious after reading the other house buying thread. :)

I just got a position and graduate in a couple weeks. I have no idea what my net income is going to be like, and have little savings, so I am renting for now. I'd like a house in a year, maybe two.

It's the best investment you can make. I bought a little 50 year old house and lived in it the 4 years i was in school. I just sold it i paid $83,000 for it and sold it for $162,000 it sold in a week and i didn't have to pay any taxes.

Man, a house for 162,000.... so not fair. We just bought a townhouse for 337,000 and that was a good deal... Seattle sucks sometimes.

Well, the lease on my townhouse is a year, so I am trapped for at least that long. I don't know if I'll be able to save any money for a house downpayment by then. :(

I have things that need money before a house:
pay off gf's $6k of credit card debt
engagement ring for the gf
wedding

After the wedding, look for a house. Sigh... maybe it'll be a while.

After moving out the parents house and heading to college, I rented for 10 years. Bought our first house in May of 2002 and will never rent again.

3-4 years ... stayed living with parents after college till I got enough savings. I don't know why people are so quick to leave if they have the option not to.

Almost 3 years. Very stupid since I bought my house with nothing down on the G. I. Bill and could have done it any time.

Oh well, I'm on house #3 now.
