How long can you leave a dog by itself (with food/water) before it's "inhumane"?

Depends on the dog. I know a teenage lab that can sprint around a field for an hour (literally constant sprinting) and be ready for more.. for that dog, I'd say 24 hours should be rare and avoided if at all possible. For older/lazier dogs, fuck it let them lay around for 3 days if they're fed.

If it has a place to do it's business and plenty of water/food then 2 days but only once every other week.

When we go on vacation, we leave the dogs for 8 or 9 days. They have plenty of water - an automatic waterer hooked to our water lines.

When we go on vacation, we leave the dogs for 8 or 9 days. They have plenty of water - an automatic waterer hooked to our water lines. They have 80 pounds of food in an automatic feeder. And they have a lot of fenced in area to run on. We just ask our neighbors to check on the house every once in a while. Ditto the cats - they get put outside with a big thing of food where they can get to, but the chickens can't. Ditto the chickens - they can fend for themselves & free range for a week. We hire someone to take care of the goats and llamas once a day. Ditto the automatic waterers for them too, plus nearly unlimited hay. Just need someone to give them grain, otherwise they'd gorge themselves on it.

Yep. As long as they have food and water and a place to go 1 week+ is just fine.

Now if the dog has separation anxiety you can expect your place to be torn up after about two days when they freak out.

Some people leave their dogs outside. Imagine that!

Crazy people.

I have a dog door and can't leave food down so only about 10 hours and I don't like to do that. I have 3 dogs and leaving food down could start a fight and thats if they didn't just eat all of it right after I put it down and they would.

We leave ours for about 10~11 hours max. He will still come outside and want to play until he is reminded to go pee.
If we are gone for any longer than that he stays with the neighbors. Most of the time we bring him with us.

yes, i assumed the OP was talking about inside
outside is different
we don't have any fenced area outside, so our small dog goes in an inside kennel or goes with us . once we left him with a friend overnight

If you asked my dog it's about 3 minutes. That's how long it usually takes her to find something and destroy it after we leave someplace without her.

We've gone out, loaded stuff up in the car and gone back inside and she's chewed something up. Plus minutes after we've left the neighbors can hear her howling in the house.

Even after 5 years we haven't been able to break the seperation anxiety. :(

FWIW, our dog is good for 10 hours or so without a potty break. The bigger the dog, typically the longer they can hold it.

mine gets separation anxiety when other people are still in the house. he can also hold it forever but he only weighs 16 lbs so it's probably not healthy.

Meh, that's what toilets are for. Plenty of water for puppy.

I always leave the toilet seat up before I go out for an extended stay. That way the cats have an emergency water supply. Their food bag is also kept on the floor, so if they run out in their bowls they can tear the bag open.

Growing up we'd leave a bag of dog food on the garage floor and leave the door open about a foot so they could go in/out. They'd be fine when we were gone for a week or more - plenty of squirrels to chase!

Haha I've seen my cat drink from the toilet from time to time, but she normally waits till I get home since she wants fresh water from the tap. She'll even put her paw in the water to make sure it's cold!

Do you try to start needless semantic battles or does that just come naturally to you?

Your problem is that you take me seriously. Try pulling the redwood out of your ass before reading my posts.

Additionally, if you thought I were trying to start an argument, why would you throw gasoline on the fire unless you're no better than what you accuse of me?
