You need to distinguish between civil and religious marriage.

Civil marriage -- which is the form of marriage in question in this debate -- is a civil institution. It is not a religious institution. There is nothing holy or 'sanctified about it, at all.

Why bump the thread? It was nearly two months old.

Just stumbled across it during a search, and experienced desire to respond. Is that not ok?

Why is there a need for gay marriage? I'm by no means religious, but as I understand it it's against the Christian religion, and marriage is a Christian activity (heh, wrong word but wherever). I'm down for gay's getting the same financial deals as married couples, and if they adopt then I'm down for them getting the same aid married couples with children have... but why go against the bible and it's teachings? I don't care if you're straight or gay or whatever you call yourself, equality is nesessary, but if they get the same benefits then the term "marriage" doesn't need to be tacked onto it.

And since I'm not Christian, I guess I can never be 'married' to my future wife but only a part of a 'union'?

From the state sponsered view. The state doesn't gave a crap if you love your wife (or husband). This in reality makes it a union. Which makes all of your anti-gay marriage zealots look even more stupid. Only a church offers marriage as a church requires (or wants) you to have "love" to have a marriage.

yes, christians are the only ones who get married, having invented the practice

Remeamber though, they are going agaisnt the 'true' meaning of marriage of which the roman catholic church made. It was orginally designed to organize people so they could be taxed in a easier way...

yah, next we can target the blacks again too...

oh god, the intolerance and bigotry of some members of this country never ceases to amaze me.

What POSSIBLE harm is gay marriage to ANY of us? You have let this administration dupe you into believing this is an issue of import. Meanwhile, the fat cats get fatter on the backs of the common folk. We are all in deep, deep trouble.

I'm not afraid of their marriage, good for them. It's if/when they have kids. I can see it becoming a defence. The kid commits a crime like murder and the laywer says, "The kid had an unstable upbringing, he had two fathers...." and the kid is determined innocent.

He would still be gulity, he punishment may or may not be as severe. Even then thats a "legal system" issuse, not because they are ghey. In any event, anyone can adopt kids including gays that are just living together. Its irrevalent to the debate.
