How long can we expect AM2 to last?

I just literally right this second found out that the Socket AM2 from AMD has been released and available for purchasing, and that got me thinking:

Is this going to be a repeat of the Socket A/462, in which it lasted a "long" time, or will it be another Socket 754 which was quickly eclipsed by the 939?

Well, if I was to guess, I'd say more like the latter, as the days of long term stability on a socket (like with Socket A) are over.

AM2 is expoected to last for a while. Talks of 65nm chips, quad will all come in AM2 flavor, and probbally if AMD makes an answer to conroe then that will indeed be availble for AM2 as well. So it's here to stay. The reason is AM2's DDR2 RAM has more capacity than current generation of chips need so it has plenty room for future chips to work with like quad, next-gen AMD chip etc. up until RAM bandwidth becomes inadequate then they have to switch platform, but not anytime soon, it's not a transition chipset like 754. but one similar to 939/socket A.

So many people have it wrong. Socket 754 was never covered and brought down by Socket 939. Socket 754 was, still is, and will be long after socket 939 is dead, a value platform. AMD will continue to make newer and faster Semprons on it for at least as long as AM2 lives.(AMD has stated that they will use Socket 754 for the value line at least until the death of Socket AM2)

So does this mean the new semprons will still use DDR1 mem, or will there be a "new" skt 754?

I may be crazy, but I swear I read there are going to be Semprons for AM2 eventually. Small cache DDR2 semprons for budget consumers. I might be wrong though.

Funny, I just bought 57 Socket AM2 3400+ Semprons today...
Socket 754 will continue, but not for current Semprons. It's being used in another platform (embedded).

Rumor has it that a new socket will come to the desktop mid-2007 or so for I assume the K8L. From what I've read though the K8L won't be here quite that soon. So not sure about the timeframe but I do believe one is coming. The name of the new socket...Wait for it.....M2!! No it's not the same as AM2. A brand new socket called M2. I also think this will be supporting DDR3 which I think Intel will move to early-mid 2007. (All of this is just me speculating on info from different sites and drawing my own ideas - so treat accordingly...)
Edit- I see AM2 as the value(Sempron and single core) platform after the new socket comes out.

I tend to doubt it...K8L will almost certainly be compatible.
Henri Richard said in a recent interview that AM2 is to be used with the quad cores as well, so I can't imagine a change...

There is a lot of confusion about K8L (some of it because of the Daily Tech article)...
The only thing that Kristopher had info on was the quad-core K8Ls (I asked him about this and he confirmed it). Dual core K8Ls are still slated for H1 07...
