How long can S-Video cables be before looking bad?

I have one of these from work:
http://www.projectorcentral.com/Sharp_XG_Series-XG-E1200U.htm

That I'm "storing" at my house. However I need to set it about 15' away from the front of the room where the DVD player is. So I need either a really long S-Video cable or two hooked together with a coupler of sorts.

RadioShack has two 8's or a 12 and a 6 that could be hooked together with a coupler to make it long enough. Would this make the picture quality look at all bad enough that I'd notice it and not like the output? The setup will cost about $50 or so.

If I moved the DVD player then I'd need a really long Optical cable to get the audio back to the tuner. And if I moved both I'd had to redo all the speaker wiring. The room isn't really set up to have the things halfway back.

As for "Storing" we hav a stash of about 10 of these projectors. They are really old and most don't work. They aren't made any more so instead of leaving them sitting in our storage closet I was told to "Take one home and Test it and Store it for a while". Needless to say I said Sure!.

I'll probably pick up the cables to make it work tomrrow and if I don't like it I guess I can just take them back. We'll have to see.

Seriously 15 feet is nothing. I would suggest buyiyng a longer cable than using an adapter.

Don't know what optical cable costs but I'd guess signal degradation wouldn't be an issue since it's a digital signal.

Try it and see, if it sucks then return the cables and rearrange you living room.

I did some looking into this before and it seems that 25 ft is the maximum you'd want to push it. apparently image degradation starts at 6ft and higher but is very unnoticeable until one gets beyond 12ft. even then, I think 25ft should look pretty damn sweet anyway.

You can go 25 feet with a high quality s-video cable. In fact, some people claim 50' or so, though the picture will degrade. My personal suggestion would be, if you decide to go over 25', go with an s-video breakout cable. That uses two coax for the long run (either RG59 or RG6) that terminates in BNC (or RCA). Then, at both ends, you'll use a S-video to two BNC cables.

coax is nice and easy (and cheap) but I think long optical may be a little more trouble, and even the short optical cables are often not cheap.

Make one out of cat5 cable. The twisting of the cable kills all electromagnetic cross talk.

Forget Radio Shack, get a high quality S-Video cable of whatever length you want from Blue Jeans Cable. I have a couple of their excellent component video cables.

wait-i work at best buy home theater-they have monster stage 3 (nitrous injected to maintain 75 ohm impedance) 24.8ft s-video cable. Its 49.99. Good luck!

That just means you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. ;)

But if it's Nitrous injected, does that mean there's a switch on the cable I can flip to make the signal travel really fast? That'd work nice. ;)

Parst express has adaptors that split svhs into two coax runs.
Then you combine them on the other und.
You can go 100' with this setup.

single cable > coupling

i ran a 25' for a long time, no problems. then again i was not dealing with super duper signals or hardware.

radioshack has some of the most lenient returns policies out there. I'm sure you'll see a little degradation, but it'll be a point of diminishing returns.
