How long can a monitor cable be?

I want to set up a dumb terminal with just the monitor/kb/mouse.
Are video signals subject to the same issues with cable length as sound?...well, I guess the answer would be yes. OK, how long can a cable from the video adapter in the computer to the monitor be? Any suggestions for a source for a long monitor cable?

I know that whenever I attach an extension onto my monitor cable (i think the default is 6') i'll get all sorts of shadows on my images
I also get the shadows when i go through a switchbox.

I think i saw "higher-grade" video cables in a microwarehouse catalog, but they were expensive (microwarehouse is usually expensive anyway) so i have not tried them..

It's probably not the length of the cable but those extra connections are causing the shadows. Shadows indicate impedance mismatch, while an overly long cable will more likely cause characters to look blurred or smeared horizontally, but sometimes the brightness will vary every few characters.

hrm.. impedance mismatch?
what causes that? is there a way to fix it?
what would it mean if it happened even with a normal connection?
i thought it might have been interference due to lack of shielding..

A lot depends on the quality of the cable. I have a 6 footer with a 3 foot extension, and have had no problems at all with that. Get good quality stuff such as Belkin Gold and you should have no trouble up to a total of 9 feet. Beyond that . . . I can't say. Haven't been there . . . haven't done that! 🙂
