Why would you need more than 768MB for home use? Servers have more memory for a reason, and if you need that much memory then you would need to shell out the cash for it because you're really in the 0.1% of the market. Hell, most apps don't even utilize more than 768MB.

There are smartphone servers? that's kind of cool.

no man, you don't need all that, there's the cloud man, all your stuff is on the cloud, so you don't need a lot of storage on your phone, man
haven't you heard of the cloud, man?

Smartphones seem to be advancing faster than laptops. In three years we went from 128 MB to 1 GB of memory for smart phones. Around the same time, laptops only went from an average of 2 GB to an average of 6 GB.

I think that your smartphone will become the brains of your laptop or desktop at some point, and that you'll just plug it into a docking station to use a bigger monitor, keyboard, or mouse. Kinda like the Motorola Atrix, but far more polished. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple builds the first "MacPhone" that works well, and everyone copies their design.

Any new technology increases capabilities at a faster rate than something that has already matured. Those RAM increases don't mean much.

One of the phone manufacturers (Samsung maybe?) is already working on a wireless docking tech that looks pretty cool. Imagine just getting within a certain proximity of your monitor, keyboard, and mouse and having the connection made automatically with no physical docking at all. That would be hella slick.

1TB flash storage is not that far off on a mobile device and would be nice for those wanting to store a decent collection of good quality recordings. 🙂

Ubuntu is already doing it.
