How long are dead lobsters good for consumption?

Bought them live and kicking at noon. Kept them refrigerated at work.

5pm at home, they're very much still alive. So I just left them in a big bowl in sink at room temperature.

7pm (just now), they're dead. We'll be eating this at around 8pm (when gf comes home).

So I'm probably being super paranoid. The carcass would be barely 2-3 hours old. Although I still feel weird dunking dead lobsters into a boiling pot. They should be all moving crazy and screaming...

HAHAHAHAA I was actually thinking of playing with them in the bath tub. Then I realized my roommate was home and would think I'm crazy.

next time, keep them in the fridge until you are ready to put them in the pot. Ideally, they should still be "wiggly" when you steam them. (FU PETA ;) )
I love fresh lobster.

Edit: I is stoopid

They're just playing dead, hoping you'll throw them out. Once you put them in the boiling water you'll see...

This.

Never leave lobsters sitting around in a warm room. They need to be kept cold.

I half submerged them in a bowl with tap water. I think I drowned them in fresh water.

Really? I didn't think room temperature would be DEADLY to lobsters.

Well, you never want to leave seafood, dead or alive, sitting around at room temperature. Same with poultry. Take it out of the fridge when you are ready to cook it.

Yep, I hate to say this, but that is the point of buying lobsters... killing them to eat them. Keeping them at room temp is deadly to humans.

This is why they're dead.

You might be in trouble - when a lobster dies it's digestive system releases enzymes that turn the meat to mush. You can cook them, but when you crack 'em open it's likely there won't be anything there to eat.

Being at room temperature for two hours, I'm not sure I'd even attempt to eat it. I'd be worried about getting really sick. I've always heard food poisoning from shellfish is a horrible, horrible thing to endure.

http://www.chilipaper.com/FWha...g/lobster_handling.htm

"Do not store the lobster in water. "

"for the lobster to be able to extract as much oxygen as is required to remain strong and healthy, they must be kept cool and their air moist at all times."

"Keep as cold as possible without freezing - lobsters weaken rapidly and die when exposed to warm or freezing temperatures. Exposure to warm air, for example,"

"If the tail of a cooked lobster is limp and has an ammonia odor, the lobster was dead for too long prior to cooking and the quality of the meat has deteriorated. Fresh cooked lobsters can be stored in the cooler to be served chilled or re-heated, or may be frozen for longer storage. "

4 lobster tails for 2 people? What are you planning to do tonight? Drill her ITB? So not only did you buy way too many lobster for 2 people, but you also made them inedible. Good luck not getting food poison w/ the dead lobsters.

You should've cooked them when you got home while they were still alive, then put them on ice or in the fridge, and heat them up when you're ready to eat them.

I want to add something to this in regard to ALL shellfish... IF you do reheat them, do NOT keep them in their shell/shell on. Take the meat out of the shell. Tons of bacteria grows in the shell that can also cause illness.

Seriously, why would you put them in fresh water and just let them sit there for two hours?

I don't even eat lobsters but would have known to put them in the refrigerator and cover them with a wet newspaper or towel.

Too bad I'm scared to eat them now.
