How long after eggs expire can you still eat them?

I throw away eggs the day after the sell by date, but people I have talked to say they eat them for weeks after that date. Seems like it could make you sick.

Crack the damn thing open. If it looks good, it is good. And this could literally be a couple of months after any magic "sell by" date.

I don't even put the eggs in the refrigerator. They sit out in a basket on the counter. Occasionally, I run out. Otherwise, as I keep adding eggs, I have no clue how old the oldest eggs are.

Don't eggs go bad after 2 or 3 days if left outside the fridge.

No.

Use some logic here. A chicken lays one egg a day. She waits until she has at least 7 or 8 eggs; sometimes a dozen or more before she starts setting on them. If they went rotten in 2 days, chickens would have gone extinct long ago.

As long as they sink in water, they're good to eat. I have used eggs 1 month past BB Date, although at that age I prefer to put them into cookies or cake.

My wife is religious about her "sell by" and "best by" dates.

I keep trying to tell her that if it smells fine and there's no mold on it and it's not miscolored, it's probably fine. We keep them in the fridge only because I've never been able to convince my wife that it's unnecessary.

She won't even eat pasta sauce if it's past the best by date. Some shit gets better with age.

Why not just do the "test." Put them in some water. If they float, they're bad. The more they stand up, the older they are.

When using them, add them one at a time to a smaller bowl so a bad one doesn't spoil the whole bunch.

I've eaten eggs weeks past expiration many times, and I've never opened a single bad / chicked egg in my entire life. As above, smell it and cook it.

As long as it still pours out of the shell.... :awe:

Not saying anything about what will happen to you a few hours later though...

My wife too. Even just 1 day past expiration and everything goes in the trash, especially eggs and milk. We waste so much food.

Mine too and its so unnecessary. Cheese is *already bad* for crying out loud! It cannot GO bad once its already there! One speck of mold or cheese hardness and its outta the fridge. Even chunky milk is pretty much OK in coffee.

I am SO never having breakfast at your house! Of course, I most likely will also never be invited, so not really an issue... hehe.

The eggs at my house are likely fresher than anything you can get in a store though. This morning for breakfast, I scrambled about 2 dozen eggs, just for the dogs. Then scrambled another dozen for me and the wife. The eggs came from the barn last night.
