I've realized lately that if I eat too late before I go to bed, I wake up with a racing pulse and a really bad upset tummy. It all goes away after a few minutes - a few hours after the first "movement", but it really is an uncomfortable feeling!
How late do you eat before you go to bed? Is there a general rule of thumb?
General rule of thumb is to eat whenever you're comfortable eating. As long as protein and EFA intake is sufficient and calories are where they should be for your goal, everything else will have a negligible impact.
Fixed.
Huh? Eating before bed is a no-no even if you're comfortable with it. Your metabolism drops, therefore you aren't burning the calories you just took in. Because of that, they are tossed into fat stores and end of story. I don't quite even know what you mean by your statement. It seems like its geared toward more general eating habits.
You're missing part of the equation. Think of it this way... when you're eating and digesting food your body stores stuff. When you're not, your body burns stuff. Even if you were to put all your calories in one big meal at the end of the day it wouldn't matter. Yes, more stuff may get stored (including fat), but you also spend MORE time burning stuff. It's a simplified way to put it, but you should get the point. In the end it balances out
There's nothing wrong with eating before bed in a situation where calories are controlled. The only time following such a rule may be beneficial is if the person tends to eat a lot more before they go to bed, where calories are uncontrolled. By telling them to not eat before bed, that person will end up eating less. It has nothing to do with what you said, it all comes down to calories in vs. calories out. As long as calories are the same, it's really not going to make a difference when you eat.
