How isn't there a Harry Potter MMO?

Last summer I read the books in a couple weeks while working at a boring job. It was a bet between a co-worker and I, which I won. I was the year or so before the Harry Potter craze, and never got into.

As a pc gaming nerd though, I couldn't help but consider the incredible opportunity for an MMO.

Here are a few of my reasons broken down.

1) The stories take place at Hogwart's Academy. This would make the perfect fantasy world for a game or any story to take place. It is old, full of treasure, full of secrets, massive, and chock full of characters and rooms for exploring. If you saw the movies or read the books you realize what I mean. They often mention crazy things in passing that would make cool dungeon crawls (just think about the chamber of secrets or the Lake).

2) The school gets "new students" every year. Start out as a first year and level and grow and explore the world. The game could easy start maybe a year or two after the start of the first year of Harry Potter and then progress on. I would think it would be awesome to have it start there and then every few months have it progress to a new year. This would add world events as plot developments that would follow the same timeline as Harry Potter. It would give you the chance to be a side character in everything but also give you access to the events. Eventually when all hell breaks lose you could be there to fight along and help whatever cause you decide. Since the aftermath of the final book (the years in between the final battle and the main characters dropping their kids off at school).

3) The Potential character development is incredible. Start with attributes and design, get placed into one of the four houses, choose school classes that will shape your character, go to upper level classes, eventually decide to side with good (harry/ministry) or evil (death eaters/corrupt ministry).

4) They already have different examples of specialties or classes in the game. Dueler, Aurors (almost like a caster paladin), Herbalists (could be like a plant based druid), Gamekeepers (hunters with pets), Potion Masters/Poison, Lycanthropes, Wizards (like Dumbledore), Rogue wizards, Animagi (shapeshifters), Pranksters/Illusionist (Fred and George), Dark Artists, so on and so forth.

I really think this would be an amazingly popular but at the same time well done MMO. As long as they don't go the easy route and make it a pathetic game trying to sell only on name it could be epic.

Remember Pokemon Blue and Red for Gameboy and Gameboy color. I completely missed the pokemon craze if it wasn't for that game. I still (as do many) consider to be the last great game for the Gameboy/Gameboy Color generation. It was an incredibly well done collection RGP.

yeah i read them all and the environment would be great. They would need to make it skewed to a little older audience that plays the MMO's. Just trying to think how the storyline would work and how big can the world end up being. Imagine adding in quidditch tournament which would be a pvp portion (pvp dueling would be sweet also)

great idea though

I think they have already tried to make them darker and more consumable by older audiences with the movies and the later books. As long as they keep the really kiddy elements out and make the humor not childish it should work well.

No melee classes might make a few people disinterested, but I'm sure a whole bunch of people would jump on if it wasn't crappy like the other HP games.

Yep, that would be my guess. That is, of course, until someone waves enough green (or brown, orange, and pink) in her face.

i was thinking if they expanded it to the other species presented in the books but it would take away from the whole character expansion and hogwarts experience...I am sure they can come up with something to do with swords or melee fighting with wands if they had too.

they could make melee. I know at one point I had thought of a couple that might be able to work. They are completely escaping me right not.

I am sure you could make Barbarianish/half giant or something melee'ers. Some sort of monks would work too. Maybe an enchanted fist type character who's magic is buffs and damager with fists.

I've been hearing rumors left and right about more books that take place in the universe but not in the storyline so I imagine it hasn't been too hard to bribe her yet.

I think I just need to convince her that I am poor and living out of my car and I can guilt her into letting me develop it... haha

what do you think??

"And Ms. JKR, I even have a letter of recommendation from KT one of AT's PCG forum Mods. It says 'IMHO this idea rocks, you rock; liscense this or GTFO. Sincerely KT'. "

I think that will work just fine.

This is like saying why isn't there a Pokemon MMO. Perfect backstory, and concept, but no one will ever do it.

I thought about this a couple years ago. Basically, I'm fairly certain we're going to see a plethora of high budget craptastic MMOs in the near future all based on Sci Fi/ Fantasy franchises. Stargate, Star Trek, Conan, Star Wars, LOTR are all out or in the works which leaves Harry Potter as one of the remaining high profile licenses out there and makes it a perfectly logic choice.

As for WHY it hasn't been out yet. Because it needs to be done right. WoW with wands and robes isn't going to cut it. It's going to need to be a girl-friendly MMO just like the books. Plenty of politics and community. Hogwarts needs to be painfully detailed and accurate and somehow needs to accomodate the millions of people who will want to play. The bottom line is that a lot more thought than "that would be cool" needs to be put into it and somebody needs to convince Rowling that it won't come off as a joke or hurt the legacy/profitability of her work.

Young kids generally don't have the time to devote to an MMORPG, nor are their parents often keen on the monthly fee.

They probably have the time, but may lack the attention span. It would probably be hard for a youngster to convince his parents to pay a monthly fee to someone "on the internet" with their credit card number just to play a game. It would actually be cheaper in the long run (assuming the parent is accustomed to buying the child games), as the child would require almost no other games if the MMORPG is good and the kid likes it.

Not Harry Potter, but similar.

your thread was actually the (re-)inspiration for my thread. When I was reading the books I kept thinking it would be a sweet idea for a game. Seeing your thread reminded me and got me to actually make a post.

Oh sure, take my thread, about something that exists, and make one about a theoretical game, and get more people talking about it! BE THAT WAY! ;)

JKR is very proprietary about her writings. She had creative control over the movies, and would have to sign off on pretty much anything done with her universe. She's already rich as Croesus, and sure doesn't need what money she would get from an MMO. She could make more just by writing another small book.

Don't think she'd put up with the usual BS from the usual online players. Doubt they would give her the control she wants either.

My guess is the only chance would be if one of her grandkids would get into MMOs and pestered her about it.

She didn't do too bad for a mom on the dole though.....
