How is your CDROM, Burner and HD configured?

I have been having some problems with my CDROM locking up my system when it is accessing info. I have my 30 Gig HD as the primary master, a 50X Asus CDROM drive as the secondary master and an Acer 6206 burner as the secondary slave. I think this config might be a problem and was wondering how other people had these three devices configured. I am considering changing them around in hopes it will solve the problem. Thanks.

IDE 1
Western Digital 18 gb (master)
Panasonic Blue Streak 16X DVD (slave)

IDE 2
Lite-on 12x10x32 cd-writer with burnproof (master)

I used to have an iomega zip drive as a slave on the secondary IDE but it caused problems so I moved it to a promise ultra ATA controller where it won't cause problems...

* make sure your first hard drive is configured as a single drive and NOT a master... You don't need to configure it as a master if the second device is a CD-Rom in fact I have found that if you do so you could have problems

Eddie...what do you mean by a "single drive" .. I thought the only options were Cable Select, Master or Slave??

I'm suprised you haven't had problems burning. Try the burner as the secondary master and the CD-Rom as the slave.

(This is my secondary system by the way. My primary has a promise controller so listing that setup might not help you.)
Primary master: HD
Primary slave: CD-ROM
Secondary master: Burner
Secondary slave: Zip-drive
(This is my secondary system by the way. My primary has a promise controller so listing that setup might not help you.)

I wish I can put both cd drives on one chain...but Nero 5.0 always pops up with this warning that doing this might cause problems...(no burnproof on burner).

I put the cd-rom as slave on masters to make sure I do not effect the transfer rate while burning cd's on the fly...

However I have seen it work in many orders, though I think the above is optimal for the most uses...

I doubt this is your issue of freezing up the system...I have seen it happen and usually you get a BSOD which you can get out of and back to the desktop...a lot like a BSOD memory error.

List the rest of your system specs to look for the real cause?

I have a cd-rom older (acer at work) that freezes when reading certain color cd-rs and cd's that may have some imperfections...maybe quality of cd-rom bites!!!

edit:

My system

maxtor ata100 IDE1: 15gig maxtor
maxtor ata100 IDE2: 45gig maxtor

primary master: Kenwood 42x cd-rom
primary slave: NEC zip
seconadry master: Aopen 1232a CDRW
secondary slave: BTC 8x32x DVD-rom

also: accessing data shouldn't be an issue transfering the data is where this type of configuration could avoid issues.

Western digital drives have a single drive, master, slave, and cable select settings.. For other drives just use master
