You have to look at overall statistics, The outliners will be what you remember but are only a small portion of the story.

It's because the government likes to spread lies about vices and other things that the government doesn't approve of. So there's no reason he should be dead.

I would think the government would love if everyone would smoke without any healthcare expenses. The way taxes are on cigarettes, it would take care of our deficit.

I'd be more interested in heaven or hell-er.

Nah...we've already got one "Heller" on here...I don't think I could stand another one...:p
(the contact high would be "mind-bottling.")

OP, you should just go kill the co-worker since he doesn't live his life by your standards...or meet your expectations.
That'll teach him...

The guy I work with is the man in question. He is 52, smokes at least 2 packs a day (maybe more), eats fast food every work day for lunch (not sure about weekends), and is an alcoholic. And very very lazy.

EDIT: added lazy

maybe he compensates for smoking/fast food/alcohol by having a very healthy sex life

I use to work at a liquor store and an 84 year old lady would come in and buy 2 packs of smokes every day. She'd been smoking that much since she was a teen, she walked about a 1/2 a mile to get to the store and seemed to be in good health. There were a lot of people her age at that old folks home who never smoked a day in their life and couldn't walk a 1/2 a mile. She's close to 90 now and still smokes the same. I guess smoking doesn't kill everyone.

The point you made is that she continues to walk. Staying active is a lot of what keeps someone going.

But each cigarette is suppose to take 11 or so minutes off your life according to doctors. While I believe that, a smoking life calculator I just ran online said her life's been reduced by a hair over 30 years due to smoking. If she's 90 now and seems fine, even if she died tomorrow. They're saying she would have lived to be 120 minimum. I know smoking kills millions a year I just find it strange when you see an exception like the one I mentioned where smoking a shitton of cigs hasn't seemed to do anything to her.

Not to sound dense, but she may not be consuming all of them on her own. Maybe she is sharing quite a few, which would skew your calculation.

There's a population spike of healthy-smokers, even with significant pack-years, in the older age brackets. This is because most of the smoking (non-healthy) population has been dying off for some time due to whatever issues (cancer, COPD, emphysema, etc...). These remaining healthy-smokers exhibit natural resistance to lung disease and are subjects of interest to a number of genetics studies.

Stands to reason they might be hearty to other issues as well, like liver or heart disease.

I think mental state has much more to do with.. well, just about everything.. than most people care to acknowledge.

IMO, the mere act of worrying about your health can make you unhealthy.

The people that live the longest are happy, care free people it seems. Of course, genetics play a role..

Regardless, saying that a cigarette takes 11 minutes off your life is just ridiculous. I would be willing to bet that there are a lot more 90+ year olds that smoke like a chimney than there are 120+ year olds that live a perfectly healthy lifestyle.

It seems like most of the oldest people in recorded history did at least one "bad" thing, whether that is drink, smoke or drink bacon grease for breakfast.

Well said. Stress destroys your immune system. Being happy and carefree bolsters it.

Smoking only raises your chances of cancer by about 8%. Don't know about alcoholism, but doesn't it take a while to destroy your liver?

That's an incredibly misleading statistic. It increases your chances of ANY cancer by 8%, but increases your chances of lung cancer by about 10 times. Lung cancer was a relatively rare disease before the proliferation of cigarettes - today about 90% of lung cancer patients are smokers.
