My cousin just bought one last month.

Seems like a nice car.

Its a silver S40 T5 in auto. No problems so far.

Edit: BTW, they are having some kind of special on them around here because they are not selling well at all. He got a pretty good deal. I think it was $27K+ IIRC.

I'd certainly buy one if I were in the market for a new car. They are very nice and well made.

Don't own one or know anyone that does, but from the ones I've seen so far I think it's a pretty sharp looking car inside and out.

First, half the cars we've owned have been Volvo's

Now, first decide how long you want to keep this car. If you want to keep this 5-6 years or more, think twice. While I can say our Volvo is reliable, there have been some small things we've had to fix. Some lights on the dashboard have gone out, a $50 wire inside the seat went bad so we had to replace it by taking it apart so we could move the seat around (required), the air pumps or whatever on the trunk that holds it open went bad recently too. After 5-6 years, small problems like this will keep coming up. Unless you're willing to fix them on your own, they start adding up.

Oh yeah, upkeep costs aren't going to be cheap once it's out of warranty, so if you're driving a Honda/Toyota right now, be prepared to spend a bit more.

What car do you have now? How long do you plan to keep this?

Oh, and my biggest complain is that they don't offer a manual tranny in the AWD setup, only for FWD. I personally want my clutch and something other than FWD...

Those are the only flaws you should know about. Besides that, GREAT cars :)

Looking at the website the T5 AWD is offered with a 6-speed manual.

Not really worth the premium over a Mazda 3, which is an excellent small sedan. Volvo engines/trannys aren't that great, t5 or otherwise...since at that price range, there are better choices available.

I agree. Mazda 3 and the new S40 are basically the same car. While I agree the S40 is much nicer, but it's just not worth the premium over a loaded Mazda 3...

At that price I'd go with a decked out Subaru Legacy GT.

My dad loves his Volvo. I think it's an 1983 760 Turbo. Used to be stick, but he changed it to auto, so my mom could drive it. Safe as a tank, and still runs pretty good.

Edit: He thinks the new ones are way overpriced now and aren't worth the money

If he wants a Volvo he is not going to get a Mazda 3 just because they share some parts.
If it was the same car it would be called a Mazda. I don't understand the reasoning among some people on this board.

Due to the recognized safety features of a Volvo you will save big on auto insurance. I have a friend who just got an s80. Traded in a Lexus of the same caliber. His insurance went down 40% with the volvo.

That's not because of saftey. It's because Lexus are HIGHLY stolen and very expensive to repair.

My Mother works in the insurance business in Personal Lines. The Volvo is and extremely safe car for passengers. They have far fewer claims for passenger injury and thus this equates to lower rates. The lexus was just an example that I knew of right off the bat. Sorry for the confusion.

I understood you perfectly. Lexus vehicles have exceptionally high insurance rates over similar cars. This isn't because of them being unsafe - it's because of them being stolen more frequently and being more expensive to repair when needed.

It didn't drop because he switched to a Volvo, it dropped because he dumped the Lexus.
