How is the reliability on Audi A4s?

I am thinking about getting a 2004 Audi A4 3.0 pretty soon. I was wondering about the reliability of A4 or should I just go for an extra 10K and get the 330ci?

Get the 100K mile warranty and you won't have to worry about anything.

Edit: I got a 99.5 Audi A4 1.8T and to tell you the truth, these cars require some special attention. You need to be very careful with what you do. Being a dumbass, I put some regular power steering fluid into the PS Resorvoir, and the whole rack/pinion/pump got fvcked up.

Total Cost: $1200

Total Cost on an Accord: Less than $500.

Neither. They're both unreliable compared to their competitors, and both have exorbitant repair costs. It this segment, if you want reliability, Japanese is the only way to go.

Too bad it'll be in the shop more than most cars. A warrantee is good for piece of mind, but it doens't include the time and patience required when you own these cars.

A 1975 Cadillac Eldorado is more reliable.

Well, my friend has a 2003 A4 and his dealership gives him a 2001 B5 Audi A4 when it's in the shop. B5 Audi is the older generation of A4s.

It doesn't matter - do you really want your car to constaintly be in the shop.

"What are you doing this week, Jane?

Oh, just taking my car in for some work, something broke.

Damn, that sucks, good thing their loner car is pretty nice. If you would have bought a Japanese car you wouldn't have these problems, ya know.

I know, but the dash stroker in me made me go German, too bad I'm paying for it in all of these trips to the stealership for stuff that shouldn't be going wrong.

Seriously, look at the new Acura TL. The Interior is leagues ahead of Infiniti, and on par with Audi. Not only that, but you get more features for the same amount of money. If you really want AWD, wait for the new Acura RL that will be coming out within the next year - AWD, near 300HP, and a better interior than the TL with Navigation standard.

Heh ...

Well, as I edited my first reply, you can see that I own an A4. Although they are nice cars, they are complex cars as well, which brings lots of problems. True.

However, I have driven lots of Japanese cars, and I never had the joy of an Quattro Audi.

The fact that he's had to service his 2003 model long enough to require a loaner car speaks volumes!

Beautiful exterior design
Beautiful interior design
Great engines
Quattro
SH!TTY reliability

Anecdotal evidence aside it's well documented that the average VW and Audi are not competitive when it comes to reliability. It's likely to spend more time in the shop, and cost more in repairs if you have no warranty, than other cars for the same price. A BMW and Audi will both cost a lot for repairs, but the difference is the BMW won't break down/require repairs every week. :)

Hmm... I get a loaner car anytime I get an oil change, so I don't think it was the time period that got him a loaner car. They typically give me one anytime I go, and I normally go to the mall and shop until the service advisor calls me on my cell phone.

The Acura is FWD, so that right there should tell you to stay the hell away.

I have a 2002 A4 3.0q and while I absolutely love it it pains me to say that I've had to take it to the shop (not for scheduled maintenance) on a pretty regular basis. It seems like every 5000 miles or so something will come up requiring a service visit. Anyway, its never been anything big so no worries about that... its just more of a pain in the rear.

I will say this, however, no other car IMHO can hold a candle in the styling department. I've seen all of the competition in this class and the A4 is just the most beatuiful car in this class, inside and out. For me, at least, this makes up for some of the pain it causes me taking it to the dealer.

Overall, though, its still a great car and I personally would get it again over the competition (g35, bmw 3, TL, is300, 9-3, C class, etc.)

Damn it, man I doubt a kia requires that many trips to the dealer. I would detest my car if it required that many trips to get something fixed!

Well, to be upfront I should say that with very few exceptions you couldn't pay me to own a japanese car..no matter how good the reliability is and or what not (however have read on more than a few Lexus boards that they have their share of problems as well)

with that said, my wife has a 1.8T Jetta and her parents have a A6, both cars are VAG products and both have been relatively trouble free with regular maintenence being the only issues....I would have no hesititation in purchasing either an A4 or a BMW and gladly take one even at a premium over any Acura, Honda, Infinity or Toyota product.....I also have seen more than a few G35s and was less than impressed with their build, especially their interior.

good luck but I don't think you can really go wrong with either BMW or Audi, IMHO forget about the Japanese cars :)

I should also mention that Audi does a really good job in the lease department where they cover virtually any kind of maintenece you can think of, their rates are really low and their service departments are generally a cut above others. If reliability is your *only* concern then I would agree that some of the Japanese cars are better options, however be prepaired to own something you really don't like the look of which could and most likely would take away from the joy of ownership....consider leasing no matter what you do though as if you do go japanese you don't want to be stuck with it if you decide the style just isn't for you...

Yeah too bad my parents sentra and civic spent more time in the shop than our Audi ever did. Granted the overall reliabilty might be better, but theres nothing worse than buying a POS honda because its so "reliable" and have it be falling apart every month.

Well, it is a glorified Euro Accord... it's quite nice interior-wise and such. The G35 is very comparable though, but if you don't like that and still want some real sportiness, go for a Mazda RX8.

The interior is also quite nice and so what if the hp is underrated. It will still be faster than the anemic Acura and handle a WHOLE lot better. It sucks that you can't deoption the Touring package on it without the Bose non-stereo... no way to get a moonroof without Blows.
