How is the Oreck XL?

I'm planning to get one, how is the suction etc... I'm used to using the Eureka Boss (which I love). My wife has an issue about it being too heavy. I understand Oreck makes a big deal about their low weight.....

It's great, but the bags fill up quick and get expensive. Maybe look at some of the new bagless Shark models.

I know people here generally do not like Dyson, but I have to say that my Dyson DC-10 animal has been a great vacuum. Its almost 12 years old and still works great.

After using both types I can say I definitely prefer bags. Truly cleaning a bagless is a pain (maybe I'm a bit OCD though).

I just got a Eureka SuctionSeal vacuum & it's AWESOME!

My only complaint is that it is fairly heavy at 20.7 pounds. However:

1. It has an automatic cord rewinder built-in, which is just the best
2. It has a switch between the floor vacuum & the hose so you get max suction on either
3. It is bagless
4. They advertise it as better than the Dyson vacuums (independent testing); it is really excellent. Floors look new. Been through probably five vacuums in the past two years...this takes the cake. So much cheaper than a Dyson too.

No recurring fees & reasonably-priced. Not sure how much your Eureka Boss weighs; while I do find the weight of the SuctionSeal annoying, the tradeoffs are worth it (cost, cord rewinder, no bags, great performance).

I have a commercial Oreck XL that I inherited when we closed an office where we had to do our own janitorial.

I love the thing. If it died tomorrow I'd go buy a new one.

What do you mean "truly cleaning a bagless?" Most have a lid that you pop open and then you dump the contents in the trash.

Are you then going in and are further cleaning that container beyond a dump? Because, yes that would register pretty high on the OCD chart.

Yes, I used to wash out the canister of my Dyson. I was disgusted by the amount of dirt that came out of the upper assembly.

My house has zero carpet and so I just have a small bagged canister for vacuum duties.

No idea how Orecks or Dysons are, but I just bougth a 'cheap' $100 hoover and the thing sucks everything up. Much better then vacuums of the past. I assume vacuums have gotten a lot better in general over the years. I'd guess that the price of dysons and such are more in the features and weight savings rather then actual suction power.

Seriously...carpets covered in cat litter and fur look freakin new after one pass with mine.

A vacuum needs to do two things; suck and filter. Doing one or the other is easy. Doing both well is the challenge.

So far my favorite vacuum is the Festool shopvac. Quiet, great suction and excellent filtration. It's truly the best vacuum I've used.

Orecks are extremely easy to repair. Buy a commercial XL off Craigslist for <$100. As long as the electric motor runs, you can replace almost the entire rest of the machine for not a lot, so if anything wrong, it's a quick fix.

I been using a $50 craigslist find for over 10 years now. I've replaced the bar and one of the ducts had a crack in it when I bought it, but it's been running fine ever since.

Love it...

I have this:

Works like a dream, and is super quiet. Suction is top notch

I have a NV356e and its pretty good. I did the test where I vacuumed with my old cleaner (Hoover Air), then used the Shark, and there was just as much dirt in the Shark as there was in the Hoover. Also used a UV light in between runs just because I have a UV light, and the Shark pretty much got everything. Only problem with it is its a Lift Away model, and its quick to tip over if you brush against it.

I hate bagless.

Yes some have a bottom trap. But in most situation when you dump it, it needs to be done outside. I have allergies, I had a bagless and each and every time I dumped it I had a attack. No matter how good you dump it, some gets in the air and /or it lines the inside of the trash bag. Worse some gets out from the trash.

Same here, I hate cleaning that canister. Mine the yellow original, do t know which # that is. But it still works great getting up the dog hair.

Oreck was a great brand for many years. Hoover bought them last year, so if you get one, get it quick. They always prided themselves on making a solid product. Chances are, they will no longer be manufactured in Tennessee eventually (if they haven't already moved operations).

My wife bought a Dyson canister and she's been happy with it. I'm still a bigger fan of buying a $65-95 cheap hoover windtunnel and throwing it away after 3-5 years. That allows you to get new plastic and not worry about where the heck the attachments vanished to. 😀
