How is the onboard audio on the 8KHA+ ?

Trying to pick out a motherboard. I want the Audigy Platinum, but don't want to pay for that yet. I'm just going to be hooking up to Labtec desktop speakers. I will eventually be hooking up to my home theater system though.

So eventually I'll be getting the Audigy or something, but how is the onboard stuff? Is it only 2 channel? or will it work with my 4.1 Labtec setup.. (I.E. front and rear outputs)

thanks!

You get what you pay for. Though I wouldn't go as far as to say that AC97 is horrible. If you are just using it to hold you over until you get the Audigy, then I don't see an issue. It will obviously use more CPU cycles than a separate add-on card but the sound is decent. Of course you also wont get the multi-channel sound, but sometimes you have tomake sacrafices when you are trying to pinch pennies. My best advice would be to try it out, if you are satisfied with the sound and performance, that's all that matters...no matter what we tell you 🙂

Pardon me if this sounds like a dumb question but if you are going to eventually hook up your home theatre system to this, then why spend the money on the Audigy? A "standard" or "generic" sound card would do in this case. After all, your home system is the one that will be processing the signals if you hook into it via an AUX port. All you need is to get a decent signal over to it. Or were you just planning on going straight from the sound card to the speakers on your home system?

bdog: nahhh, don't want an Nforce board just to get good sound 😀

Need4Speed: Yeah it's mainly to hold me over until I get more room to hook it up to multiple speakers. I don't have room for that right now. I figure it would kind of be a wasted to buy the Audigy, and not be able to reap the full benefits by not having everything else hooked up to it. By the time I'm ready to do that I'm sure the prices on them will have come down, and new products out.

Buz2b: Yeah, I would LIKE to run digital out of the Front drive on the platinum...someday 😉 But yeah, It will still be analog, but I figured a higher end sound card might put out a cleaner stronger signal than just the AC97 off the back of the mobo...

If I were to buy an Audigy, would it be possible to add-on that front drive at a later date?

For me the onboard sound was worse than useless. Attempting to use it in any fashion slowed my system progressively to full lock-up over 15-20 min. Otherwise the board is excellent. For your usage a Guillemot MuseXL from NewEgg will give most excellent 4.1 sound for under $20.

I have a 8KHA+ and it sounds ok to me. I'm not aware of any slow down or loss of system preformance when using it. I also have another system with a SBLive and it only sounds slightly better.

I must be getting old not being able to tell the difference... has anybody seen my hearing aid? 😉
