you are young and don't have a family to support or a mortgage to pay. i'd move out here and then just move somewhere else if i didn't like it.

I liked NY when i went to visit there last year.
I know a couple people out there already.
I've been told that there are a lot of really good marketing firms, and design agencies out there.
I like the food out there.

Look like you are sold....when should we expect you.

Initiation? 😛...jk...

and the food was just...meh.

thats why you need to know the captain. i went there a few months back and had 17 dishes among 4 people for $50 per person after tax and tip. the bill shouldve been around 150 per person after tax and tip.

same here, but i heard so many good things, i figured i'd give it a shot. also the place was fairly loud which i did not like at all. oh well...

I have an uncle who lives down there. They live in one of those coop buildings in I think the midtown area. They don't own a car, they rent one if they leave the city. They got in early enough that they can afford to live there on what they make.

It's insane though, just looking at that one apartment site linked in this thread, it looks like people in NYC are paying 4x what I pay for a nice 2bedroom upstate, add in $250+ a month for parking and it just gets worse. Everything is more expensive down there.

Cost of living in NY & CA are pretty much the same right? I just graduated from college and I wanna work here 1st to save up some $$ before I move out to cali.

fastest way is to just live at home with the parental units, never go out and save all your earnings...

if you choose to pay rent, never eat out and buy your monthly living supplies (food, toiletries, etc) from Costco or Sam's Club...or eat White Castles, Gray's Papaya or in Chinatown everyday 😛

$1000+ a month for a 2 room apt.
Bathroom,and one other room.
Plus heat/electric/cable/phone/internet/etc..........

Yeah Baby!! I wanna move to NY City, where there is No parking,
a Gallon of milk is $3.50 vs $2.79 locally. etc....................

You need like a $55,000 salary or more to make it.

and 55k is hard how? most people graduating from college and working a corporate job in nyc start at 55k

is that what they're starting at nowadays?...from what field of study?...I started at 41k back in '98, that was with a CS degree...I know that accounting started much lower that year...

going into IT or business, you will most likely start at 55k if you're with a large or prestigious firm

I have no problem leaving my car in california, im sick of traffic here. Ok, other than rent what makes it so expensive to live out there?

so lets recap, NYC is expensive because of housing?

food$ == food$ (how do you go grocery shopping in the city anywyas? small trips?)

subway$ + taxis$ < gas$ + auto insurance$

and then ?

Ok, i just realized i've been a little jaded with what to expect from NY. I've only been there during the summer, and i can handle the heat and the humidity. How are the other 3 seasons like? How does the subway get affected, and how is morning rushhour?

The cost of things in general is higher in NYC. Compared to MD, everything has about a 20% markup (including groceries).

Groceries can either be delivered to your apartment or purchased in small trips. Many people own their own mini shopping carts to bring back lots of bags from the store.

Subway will cost you $76 / month for a monthly pass. Use that as a basis of comparison with your current gas + insurance costs.

It can get quite cold in the winter. Snow is pretty common.

Subway stations are always hot (especially in the summer time), but as they run underground throughout Manhattan (above ground in many of the outer boroughs) they are rarely affected by the weather. Rush hours are crowded, but it all depends on what trains you take.

A buddy and I were thinking we needed a change of scenery, and thought at age 25 it was the best opportunity to live somewhere else. I was just wondering how the job market was out there for a Graphic Designer and an Auditer? We've both got about 2 years of experience.

The auditor is going to have to carry the graphic designer. Really hard to find a design job in the city and if you pull in less than six figures you are going to be living in some roach den in Brooklyn.

Not to be negative about your little plan or anything 🙂

Amen, i just moved to nyc in april. The women are stunning in the summer.
My salary isnt anything amazing, and I live in the east village. I can comfortable go out, do groceries, and treat myself here and there.

nyc is expensive to live and play, ain't gonna lie. get an apt outside manhattan and commute. i'd rather do rush hour in the subways then in LA.

you get all four seasons, which is great. but it ain't for most people. ski/snowboard in the winter, long island beaches in the summer - kickarse seasons in-between.

you don't really need a car here, but if you can afford it, it's awesome. been here 21 years, no terrorists gonna make me leave. 😛

Well i figured my life wouldn't be as easy as it is out here. I just want to go out there, grind it out for two years, have as much fun as i can, but really try to push myself at my work. Street Hotdogs, and frozen burritos are fine with me. I just have to see if i can save 10k by next winter, for emergency money.

Technology wise, as a Network MGR, there has been a sudden upshift in job opp's in our large firm. We are looking for people with dekstop skills all the way to routing/switching experts.
