NYC public transportation will take you to Rockaway if you want to go to the beach.
Grand Central has the LIRR which takes you out to Long Island which many consider country.
Then there is Amtrak, and the bus terminal that can take you mostly anywhere.

rent a car, bus, trains, planes, mooch off friends with a car. but if you live in manhattan you don't NEED a car.

i have a car that i keep at my parents house in queens. best of both worlds. 🙂

Its easier in the Summer though, the city is not as packed.

not just the rockaways, coney island (blech), orchard beach, city island, you can take the LIRR (from penn station, not GCT) to get to fire island, robert moses, jones beach....

us new yorkers can make do without a car.

As tami mentioned, try and secure a job before moving. NY (especially Manhattan) is an expensive place to live in, so you don't want to commit unless you have some income.

That said, I've lived in NYC for about a year with my fiancee and I love it. It's a totally different feel from the blah MD suburbia where I used to live. There's always something to do and interesting things to explore. There are some things I miss (my car, air quality), but overall I'm happy with the change. That's not to say I'd live here forever, but it's an experience I don't regret.

I'm from Queens. In the summer we use to go up North for the Summer like Lake George, Cape Cod, etc.

Now I live upstate and everyone up here goes to NYC, Jersey Shore, etc for summer.

Manhattan = lower paying but harder working jobs with MUCH higher cost of living. I know this first hand as I've lived here for over 20 years ugh. It gets even uglier for artists.

First off - you would probably not live in Manhatten. Costs in other areas of the city, while still being high when compared to other areas are quite a bit more reasonable considering pay rates are also a bit higher. You would definitely want to have something lined up, or at least a few interviews in place before you would even think of moving there.

If you plan on living ON Manhattan in a half decent section, you better be making $80-$100,000 a year. Don't even think about owning a car either. Parking can cost up to $20k a year alone. Otherwise, you will probably live in Brooklyn or Queens and take the train in like mostly everyone else.

IE: My grandparents have had the same apartment in the village for 45+ years. They pay $550 a month in rent. Their neighbors across the hall pay $1700 a month.

Get the stars out of your eyes. NYC is not special and isn't a great place to live. Talk to any native new yorker and they will tell you they can't wait to get out. Anyone who says they love NYC didn't grow up there.

San Francisco is the most expensive city to live in, but Manhattan is #2.

Aint that the truth. The only reason my uncle is even managing is because hes been living in the same apartment for roughly 20+ years for $600/month, everywhere else prices has skyrocketed (and its the lower east side too). One good thing about NYC though is convenience, tons of 24/7 grocery stores.

and 55k is hard how? most people graduating from college and working a corporate job in nyc start at 55k

Thats how much i figured i needed to move out there.

I figured i only wanted to go out there for 2-3 years, then come back to LA. I've just been doing a lot of travel in the past year, and i've really gotten sick of LA.

is that what they're starting at nowadays?...from what field of study?...I started at 41k back in '98, that was with a CS degree...I know that accounting started much lower that year...

My company is constantly looking for Auditors, IT Auditors too.

My advice to you College Freshman. Major in Acounting and get your CPA.

i know last year graduating with a CS degree i started at 35k and a small company. no im at a big bank and making more than twice that.

I liked NY when i went to visit there last year.
I know a couple people out there already.
I've been told that there are a lot of really good marketing firms, and design agencies out there.
I like the food out there.
