How is the Manhattan New York Job Market?

A buddy and I were thinking we needed a change of scenery, and thought at age 25 it was the best opportunity to live somewhere else. I was just wondering how the job market was out there for a Graphic Designer and an Auditer? We've both got about 2 years of experience.
 
my friend's fiancee is a graphic designer with about 10 years experience working with a textbook company.

she's moving to ny today and has been looking for a job for the past few months without success.
 
it's pretty expensive. i've moved a hundred times (from living in a studio alone to roommates to finally getting married and getting a 1br apt for the two of us). go secure a job first before you make the move.

for some reason, many salaries in nyc are lower than a comparable job in another city. it really depends on the companies you work for though.

not so bad, but GET A JOB FIRST. it took me 6 months to find my current job.
 
It does cost a lot to live here, especially if you are coming here now for the first time.
Job mkt seems soft still but I have not been looking too much.

Thats a good deal for the UES. I live there too and pay 1100/month.
 
Put it this way. I was offered 3x my salary to move to NYC to do IT for a bank. Cost of living would have made it pointless.

If you plan on living ON Manhattan in a half decent section, you better be making $80-$100,000 a year. Don't even think about owning a car either. Parking can cost up to $20k a year alone. Otherwise, you will probably live in Brooklyn or Queens and take the train in like mostly everyone else.

IE: My grandparents have had the same apartment in the village for 45+ years. They pay $550 a month in rent. Their neighbors across the hall pay $1700 a month.

Get the stars out of your eyes. NYC is not special and isn't a great place to live. Talk to any native new yorker and they will tell you they can't wait to get out. Anyone who says they love NYC didn't grow up there.

San Francisco is the most expensive city to live in, but Manhattan is #2.
 
The latest forbes magazine reports that seattle is the most expensive city to live in, if you compare the cost of living to average salary. New York city is #2.

im a native new yorker, and i don't want to leave. hmmm...

and owning a car in nyc is unnecessary.

Then how do you ever leave town? What if you want to drive to the mountains, or travel to another state?

I think you're probably just a city slicker who never wants to leave the city.

sitting in traffic day in and day out sucks even more.

i much rather sit on a train, then have to deal with traffic everyday. my commute is from nyc to stamford, ct rite now.

You rent a car or take the train/bus.
