How is the ASUS A7m266 motherboard?

I currently have the MSI Ms-6380 K7T266 Pro Raid mobo and it has blown two 1.4 Ghz 266 FSB processors, the first one lasted a little which and let me load windows but as soon as I changed the FSB from 100/200 Mhz it froze and eventually fried. Still have no clue why it did this. As soon as I got the new one, I was going to update the BIOS, but it did not even as much load, just hung and the D-LED lights on the board say the processor is dead. I am not understanding why it is doing this, but I think somehting is definately wrong witht he motherboard. So I plan to return it for the ASUS A7M266 board. How good is this board, the reason why I ask is b/c it is actually recomended by AMD for the 1.33 Ghz processor, which I plan to trade my 1.4Ghz one in for that, since all the mobos for the 1.4Ghz suck (atleast the AMD recomended ones suck). So I will be running the ASUS board with a 1.33Ghz chip 266 FSB with 512 mb ddr memory pc2100. Do you think this is the way to go? I am also going to try and swap out my 300 watt power supply to make sure that is not bad. Any other suggestions on my new system failure with the MSI board?

Check out Enermax Whisper power supplies, very nice quality, heavy, and dual fans... Plus you don't have to wrap the main power cable, it comes wrapped already! 😉

I love the ASUS A7M266 board, I believe it's one of the most solid Socket A boards on the market right now. Combine that with a solid power supply, you should be fine... I had no problems with a 1.4Ghz chip on this board either. AMD760 chipset is pretty solid, but runs hot.

ASUS announced the ASUS A7M266MP board, which is the next board I'm excited to see... duallys baby!

I just built my system with the same board and it is terrific. I am having problems with the on-board sound, but that is another issue. Anyway, it is a good, rock solid board. You should have no problems with it. I love mine. It was also easy to work with and set up when building which was a plus for a klutz like me!😀

What is the fix for the via south bridge USB problems? Just stay away from win98? This is my only issue with non-intel controler chips. Otherwise the ASUS A7M266 is a rock solid board and the AMD cpu's are great, if a little on the hot side. If you aren't tech savy tho I strongly recommend that you stay away from interenet purchases and pay the extra to pick up your items from a local store and pay them to install it. Doubley so if you go with the AMD solutions.

If you are planning on doing any overclocking, I would avoid this board since it does not allow multiplier adjustment like all the other AMD761 motherboards. IF you are not thinking of overclocking, it is a great board and you should not have any trouble with it..🙂

Same here...very stable, fast, and easy to use!

"Here a link on how to modify the A7M266 to allow multiplier adjustments."

I don't think most people want to spend more than $125 on a new motherboard and then solder on a new component when they could just buy one that allows adjustment right out of the box...

The A7M266 overclocks great using the FSB and remains very stable. It is not the board to buy if you plan on overclocking a lower speed CPU. I had no problems running a 1.4 at 1.575 with this board.
