How is the 2D on an Asus V7100 (GeForce 2MX) at 800x600 or 1024x768 (TrueColor)?

I've heard people complain about 2D quality on nVidia cards at high res for various reasons...but I have fairly severe visual imparements so I would never use a 17" monitor over 800x600 or 19" over 1024x768, even that may be pushing it....

Anyway my question is, will nVidia's "low quality" 2D come into effect at such low resolutions?

I'm looking specifically at the Asus V7100/TV-out and Asus V7100/2VID or possibly Hercules 3D Prophet MX w/ Dual Display if it ever comes out...

The 2d quality and clarity on my Hercules MX is excellent! Mine is an OEM version of the single head card. Much better over the Voodoo3 I was using before.

For 2D, Matrox has the best cards. Chech out the 450, it's even ok for a gamer, if you have a fast CPU.

Yeah I know the matrox series have the nicest 2D, but I want to be able to play Quake3 and upcoming games like Duke Nukem Forever, and IMO any new video card purchase should have some T&L capabilities. ATi and Nvidia have T&L, matrox says their G800 will, and 3dfx says their Rampage/Sage will. So within 6months all the graphics card MFRs will be making T&L standard, my Voodoo3-2000 has lasted me 14 months now, I plan to push my GF2MX up to 200/200Mhz and try for about the same lifespan on it.

How much does the G450 cost? If it's in the same price range as the MX maybe I'll consider it....but I think I'm going MX or possibly Radeon SDR if it shows up before I buy.

When i tested the Radeon, the 2D was pretty good, but the 2D on the MX cards are not that bad either, not like the TNT2.

The Radeon SDR is already available here in Europe, so that should not be a prob.

If i were you i would probably get the Matrox, it's in the same price-range as the MX, WITH DDR.

I like Matrox cards, i had a user complaining about his crappy monitor, we installed a G450, and now he complains no more. And Matrox cards usually works in all kinds of configurations.

For 3D quality, well, many article writers use the G400-450 as a reference card, and it always has clearer colors, better greyscales and better sharpness than the tested cards.

Uh Patrick the G450 uses 64 bit DDR memory so its only as fast as standard sdram.

Of course, if you expect SDR to bo 128bit wide, it's the same speed, i know this...

But, for the best image quality in both 2D and 3D, Matrox is the one, wouldn't you say?

And for 3D, the speed of a 550 Athlon should be enough.
