I am thinking of getting a new laptop to access the wireless network on campus. I am currently very serious looking at Sony VAIO R505EL but I couldn't find very much information online. Has anyone had experience with this machine? I also have my attention on Compaq Presario 900 and Dell Inspiron 4150. Has anyone had experince with them? I had a Compaq laptop before and it was totally a piece of cr*p but this Presario 900 with Athlon 1700+ seems to be getting very good reviews everywhere.

Any recommendation for a laptop (under 1650) with great portability will also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know much about the Sony, but on the compaq you might want to avoid the XP processor because it's battery life is pretty low since it's a desktop processor. Other laptops you might want to look into are the Dell Inspiron 8200 or the Compaq 2800T

I don't really know about the Compaqs you are talking about, but I had one once and didn't like it very much. I am considering a new notebook at the first of the year, but I have to do more research. I went to Circuit City the other day and they had a Sony that was 16.1 inches, but the display looked washed out. There were a couple of Toshiba's there and they seemed reasonable. I want to get one with an ATI 7500 base video or better. Try here to see if you are interested in any value notebooks.

Good luck
