how is someone a great 3point shooter, but terrible free throw shooter?

because on the free throw line people don't jump. bowen probably gets a lot of his shooting base from his legs and his jump, when he's on the free throw line, he's probably not gettin down enough and not getting enough base. he then has to force it up too much with his arms, thus causing him to be inconsistent and a bad free throw shooter.

only one reason not to be a good free throw shooter......

practice

don't give me any of this crap about Shaq being too big to shoot free throws, his is wrist is injured, blah blah blah....

It's definitely not an issue of insufficient force. He can "spring" up with his legs while keeping his feet on the floor.

that's true, but whether or not they do it is the point

but they are still a better free throw shooter than a 3-pt shooter. they're still making a higher percentage of free throw in than 3-pt'ers in. ex: avg FT % .70 vs .40 for 3 pt'ers.

or in bowen's case: .576 > .339; technically he is better at free throws than 3 pointers...

and of course, why can people see better farther than nearer? its called farsightedness.

You can jump for a free throw, u just cant land over or step on the line. but nobody does it cuz you really dont need to jump to shoot a ball from the FT line when there are no defenders.

also pressure is another thing that contributes to this, when everybody is standing there and just watching u plus all the fans, you feel like you are the one that will either make or break the team depending on if u make or miss the shot.

Exactly, it's all about the muscle memory. You use different muscles when you're jumping and your arms spring more on a 3 pointer. I used to play basketball... back in the day.
