It's an awesome series, you just have to have your expectations in line. As mentioned, it's not a modern day Star-Trek. It's a drama and a damned good one at that.

For those of you who have seen BG and The Wire, which is better overall?

I'm actually surprised there are a few online articles comparing BG vs The Wire. The Wire usually wins but BG has some fans as well.

Is BSG more like DS9 or Voyager?

ds9. the showrunner for bsg wrote many ds9 episodes. he was on voyager too but quit because they kept hitting reset after each episode.

I loved it. The first two seasons were the best. Kind of went downhill in the middle of season 4.

Yeah. It isn't the best show ever and certainly doesn't hold strong throughout all 4 seasons, but it is still worth a look for any sci-fan without ADD.

FWIW, I loved starbuck.

It's a fantastic show. Here are some pointers that should help you enjoy it more:

2. THIS SHOW IS NOT A SCI-FI. Don't let anyone fool you into thinking that. It might be set in a sci-fi environment and mention sci-fi topics, but it is a DRAMA (like Lost, Breaking Bad, etc.). It's all about the characters and the story.

No, it is a Sci-Fi. Just because it has ample amounts of drama does not mean it is no longer a science fiction show. Everything about the subject matter aside from our species is pretty much science fiction.

You ever heard of romantic comedies? Just because they have comedy and romance doesn't mean they can't be considered both, hence the name.

I started watching it a few weeks back. Best Buy had all seasons on sale for $20 each on Blu-Ray and you could trade in a DVD and get $5 extra off. Pretty sweet frakkin' deal!

I'm in the middle of season three now, and let me say...
the episode where they save the citizens from the Cylons on New Caprica was awesome. I loved how he jumped the ship into atmo just to release the vipers and then jumped back out!

There is no comparison to be made between The Wire and BSG. This is coming from a big fan of both. One is an immersive, terribly realistic portrayal of crime, police work, drugs, and poverty in a relatively large american city. One of the best dramas ever, period.

The other is one of the best modern sic-fi dramas ever. Very good acting, decent production values, decent writing, and enough seasons to flesh out a story (even if some are upset by the ending).

I appreciate both, but The Wire is on another plane.

I hope you're right because I liked DS9 more than Voyager.

The creator and head writer of BSG wrote at least 26 episodes of DS9. He joined Voyager for a month and then quit.. it more to do with how poorly their writing staff worked together than anything else.

Funny, because BSG is what Voyager should have been.. a ship on its own in an unknown universe.

I'll have to take a closer look at that, I can't remember it.

I would also highly recommend the the... I'm not sure what it was, I don't think it was an episode, but it was called Razor. It's about Galactica's Sister ship. 2 hour movie and really interesting. It shows how they justified killing civilians, there was a hot aussie-accented Asian woman and a crazy gun ho Lesbian admiral that shoots people that don't follow her orders...great stuff.

It's a movie that shows you the events that were only talked about during the show. They covered (in words) how Kane executed her XO and ordered the relatives of the desired people aboard the civilian ship to be executed during the show.

I trailed off somewhere after a season or two, I just really disliked most of the actors save for a couple, and the writing just felt clunky to me. What I wouldn't give to have multiple seasons of Firefly instead :\

Preaching to the choir. I've memorized most of those eps, kinda like Faulty Towers.. best thing on tv why not make more?

But at least they didn't self destruct like Andromeda and Lexx, both shows started off like gangbusters then did the "Fall and decline" thing.

Perhaps this is just me, but am I the only one that feels that BSG never lived up to the potential of its pilot? The pilot did so many awesome things, only for the full series to be muddled in melodrama.

Is BSG more like DS9 or Voyager?
It's like DS9 in that it has an overarching plot, but it's like Voyager in that much of the time it's not very good. Ron Moore is very much like Col. Tigh - an excellent XO, but a god-awful captain.

I'll say it again. The show was at its best in the first half of season 4. 4.0 was brilliant. The first 4 and last 4 of season 3 were unbelievable.

I suggest reading jammersreviews.com .

I'm going to check those out again sometimes expectations colour our judgement.

Still the biggest impression I have from the show is the first few episodes. It was GREAT, nuking the cities, killing the baby, robot spys, soundless space battles, entire battlefleet wiped out except for one old derelict that was about to be put in a museum, the galactica. I watched the beginning of the series more then once, as much as I enjoyed it, I never learned to like the female star buck.

The 2nd biggest impression for me was how horrible the show ended. Everybody seems to be a robot, then they disappear or go into the future... too much religious hogwashc

You contradict yourself because a majority of the first season was heavy on religion.
