How is Seagate with RMA's?

anyone have any experience on RMAing a drive? looks like my 80GB Barracuda is about to die.. i was in the middle of installing Americas Army: Operations and i got a file error, please retry.. click on retry and it seems to go thru.. then i get a BSOD saying i have a Hardware error... reboot. that takes longer than normal.. after entering my login/pw i get another bsod.. error isnt identical, but says Hard error or something..

it's not the program since i scanned with NAV, AVG, and TDS-3 (Anti-trojan program) and results were clean..

is RMAing pretty quick with Seagate? thanks!

i RMA'ed a 40gb a couple months ago, no problems, did the online thing, sent the drive UPS, got the new one about 8-9 days later (2-3 days from MO to TX, 2 days processing, 2-3 days back from TX to MO)
easy cheezy

Still.. Seagate is behind the times. WD, Maxtor, Fujitsu, Samsung ALL have advance replacement warranties.. They send the replacement to you before you send in the defective drive..

Seagate? Old school.. send drive in.. wait for replacement. The biggest reason the company I work for doesn't sell Seagate..

i think you can get advance replacement if you give them your credit card number, i wasn't in a hurry so i just did it the "old fashioned" way 😉

thanks for the replies..

gonna try and save some stuff before sending it in.. it's a IDE drive btw.. Seagate Barracuda IV 7200rpm 80gb drive.. i think it was cuz it was a bare drive i bought at fry's.. no more bare drives for me.. this is the first time that i have ever had a problem with a drive.. bought it in february.. oh well. good thing i have 3 other computers to use..

what did you guys use for packaging? the seagate website says use a seashell (came with my bare drive) and

Enclose the static-protected drive in 2-inch thick foam rubber in a corrugated box. Multiple drives in a single box must have foam rubber between each drive. DO NOT USE foam packing pellets, bubble wrap, or newspaper.

where the heck can i buy this foam rubber?

i wonder if they'd mind if i used my retail maxtor box/foam from my 80gb d740x drive i just bought.. 😛 nah, they'll probably mess with the drive the send me back if i did that..

You can probably find an old foam pad in a dumpster or from a friend, relative, garage sale or maybe even a furniture store. The same type they sell at Walmart in the bedding section for $14 or so. Just cut it up with a pair of scissors. Wrap the drive securely with the foam rubber and then tape.

I've RMA'd to Seagate a number of times and have used foam pads when pre-cut drive foam was unavailable. Always make sure the amount of foam exceeds the 2 inches or 4 inches they require. Use the flat side of the foam rubber against the surface of the drive. Ensure the drive is in a static bag.

BTW, the drives go to McAllen, TX. Then Seagate ships them across the border for repair. I've had good luck with their RMAs. IDE or SCSI.

When I asked the Seagate rep about the foam, she suggested I cut up a portion of a matress pad, which is what I ended up doing since we were moving and throwing that one away anyway. 🙂

I gotta RMA one too, think I may have shorted it out accidently
