How is Samsung so dominant?

So as a tech nerd, I sometimes will follow up on their smartphone market. They have a huge product line on their android devices, as well as other technologies that made them stand out like their amoled display tech and their exynos processors.

I have also heard that they made CPUs for Apple and what not.

How did they get where they are today? How did they managed to come up with these technologies.

Hookers and blow, everyone knows this.

Nah... it's those captured Roswell aliens that they have in the sub basement of their corporate headquarters. They keep pumping out a new smartphone design every six months in exchange for pretty Korean "Earth Women" to snack on.

Come on... I thought that the cell phone building aliens were common knowledge in the tech circles.

If I were to buy an Android phone, Samsung is the last place I'd look. They're hideous.

I would say a good part of what they do is change the market. They were one of the firsts to release a phablet type of phone (Galaxy Note). They're constantly looking for and creating changes that their customers want.

Meanwhile, a good portion of other phone makers seem to simply try to make something as good as the competition. The don't necessarily innovate, and when they do, it isn't well received.

That's my take anyway. That, and it helps they're already an electronics giant.

I'm a huge fan of Samsung. All of my phones have been Samsung and I've had zero issues in 10 years or so. Same goes with 2 computer monitors and 3 televisions. Their customer service is also very good in my experience. I think the reason for this is it falls into the category of 'if it isn't broken, don't try fixing it'... There's no reason for me to change brands with such good experiences with Samsung. That's just me though.

I know very little of Samsung's history but I would venture a guess the reason they are so successful is because they are also one of the leading manufacturers of SoCs, memory, displays, batteries, etc.

When you're that vertically integrated it allows for two key things- a lot easier of a time at innovating, (because you are more intimately familiar with the new manufacturing technologies, better in-house prototyping, etc) and also an economic advantage so you can produce your own components cheaper than nearly anyone else can

Same reason Intel has an advantage being both a chip developer and manufacturer

It's not to say that being vertically integrated always going to be a great success story, but when if/when you pull it off right it's hard for anyone who needs to rely on external suppliers to compete

From a guy who has spent a ton of time in wireless, I generally find Samsung phones kind of gimmicky and cheaply made. They always have either a great screen, camera or something else that's physically attractive but they never seem to age well. Batteries tend to age poorly or just a part in the phone craps out early. I don't have anything scientific to back this up just personal observations.

Not sure, I think my first Samsung product was a monitor (900nf) back when monitors were big as hell still. Their TVs are supposed to be the best also. Not sure how they stay competitive making everything from phones to refridgerators to ships, generally when a company becomes that diverse in their product they start to lose focus and don't do any of it well. So far Samsung seems to be doing well though (I think, haven't researched it at all).

I haven't had the best experiences with Samsung. I've experienced bad Samsung LCD computer monitors, TVs, and MP3 players.

I'm still expecting the 500GB SSD I just bought will work a lot better because Samsung SSDs have been generally regarded as the best.

Fixed the LCD by replacing bad capacitors.

[edit]

I forgot to mention my N900 and 2x VGA1000 color flip-phones.

The N900 was an expensive piece of garbage that just DID. NOT. WORK.

3 Sammy products here. An LCD which the main board failed after a few years of ownership. A laptop which is pretty much falling apart after 3 years, even though it has top notch components for it's day. Tried to upgrade it to Win10, but Samsung has no interest in supporting their products. What they push them out the door is what you get.

I do really enjoy my Galaxy S5. I had an iPhone 4S before, and the Galaxy is leaps and bounds beyond it. The software support is still kind of bad, but that is just as much on Google as Samsung. I shudder to think how much a smart phone would cost if they were all running iOS.

Because they don't sue others for rounded corners?

Or, could be hookers and blow.

I thought hookers and blow was Apple's recipe for success... or maybe that was orgies and acid. The history isn't clear on that one.

Then it would make sense that it's also how Samsung has become as big as they have, they do their best to copy Apple.

This. Samsung is the mobile hardware equivalent of google. How do you guys not remember samsung having some of the best memory even if it was rebranded? AT you disappoint!

Well Apple did invent round corners.

Apple invented a handheld computer connected to the cellular network. The deal they cut with AT&T to do so was a landmark tech deal IMO. I always wondered why the internet and cellular networks were two separate entities before smartphones. There was so much connectivity potential.

I am pretty sure 90% of OT plebs don't ever touch the other forums. The ones who actually use those them stay in those forums, or might wander in to OT and bump a necro thread which is promptly locked.

OT is basically a dozen people, an alt or two, just recycling the same garbage. Every once in a while, a P&Ntard mucks up an OT thread, but it just ends with a whooshing sound.
