Off-topic.net has about as members as AT.. usually more active members than AT

They allow things like custom avatars and image attachments...plus it's fast

Not only do they not have subscriptions, they don't even have banner ads ! 😕


How they heck do they get enough money to run it (I see they take donations, but that couldn't possibly cover the costs) ?

Either their vBulletin software is extremely more efficient than FuseTalk or somebody
won the lottery and decided to create a forum.

Well anyway to answer your question, OT is owned by a single person (Fazle on that board) who supports the site out of pocket. Yes, that means he's loaded. He's also dedicated to making the site ad-free but lately has been forced into asking people to make donations where they can to support the site. Great guy who's put a lot of money where his mouth is in supporting the community over there.

That answer everything, I guess. As I mentioned earlier, please de-link the site and just refer to it as "OT"...

I believe Off-topic.net came from a honda-acura message board... it used to be just a forum inside a Honda-Acura board (like here at anandtech), and eventually the Off Topic forum got so large it was separated into a different site altogether...

I used to be a member of that Honda-Acura message board before off-topic was separated...

There were p0rn/babe threads there almost daily...

There is ALOT more to the story than that, but basically, that is correct.

I've met Fazle a couple of times and he is a great guy, but he knows the limits of OT.net. Theres a ton of idiocy that goes on there along with some very racy stuff as well.

I've been on OT.net for like 3+ years and I don't visit it very often because of the amount of idiots there. There are still a group of the old timers still kicking around though.

When OT.net got moved from Honda-Acura, the member account I had at Honda-Acura was automatically created at OT.net... thus I could use the same account to login at both of these boards...

After a while (I dont go to OT.net much), I couldnt login at OT.net anymore... was there a server crashed which erased all member info??? Or maybe I just remember my username/password wrong...

He was able to use the database because he was basically running H-A.net as well. Chriswebmaster @ H-A.net was abusing Faz's generosity. He split from H-A.net and kept all the users. Then came the massive upgrade about a year and a half later and users who weren't active were deleted.

Lately for the past couple months, i have been visiting OT more frequently than i do ATOT.

The babes threads, custom avatars, OT-Upload, image attachments, the laxness of the moderators ... and most of all, the free spirit and humor, though weird at times, that goes around in OT simply amazes me and brings me back every day for more 🙂

The vibe that goes around on OT is more of a teenager/early 20's scene; however, if you are interested in discussing serious subjects such as politics, religion, economy etc. there is a on topic section where flaming, post whoring, and smart @$$ replies are kept to a minimum.

OT is simply *AWESOME* 😀

edit** and yes, like every forums out there, OT does have it fair share of stupid/idiotic members**
 
hmm... definitely interesting, but seems to be too loud and wild, kinda anarchy-ish. i prefer the more "clean" internet, not that giant mish mosh.
