I know someone in the army. A female, however I dont know much more.

Personally I believe in Non Violence and hence will not join any of the armed forces.

DarkManX,

Even when I was in, the answer was yes to all of those questions. Our big thing was stereo equipment. Monster systems. No PC's back then. And, I had a 66 VW Fastback that I tooled around in while I was in Germany.

The_good_guy,

Fortunately, not all feel that way. If that were the case, then there would be nobody to protect your candy-ass.

During my 6 years of military duty, I consumed more beer on the weekends than I did in college in the dorms. Matter of fact, my baracks we're more lively on teh weekends than my dorms! Basic training and AIT is all part of being an enlisted member, but if you like free food (probably the worst on the planet), a clean freak, like to wear camo's everday, free medical, are single w/no kids, a conformist that can deal w/the structure and function of the military and like to shoot a gun every once in a while (depends on your MOS though) - go for it. Score a 2 year enlistment and try it out - 2 years isn't that long - if ya like it, reenlist, if you don't like it, don't reenlist. After reading all the postings though, goto college and get into ROTC and emerge as an Lt...better pay and presige.

my dad loved it, but he was an officer. Here's a hint if you're going to do it, go to college and do ROTC. They pay a ton for your college degree, then you go in as an officer for a few years. Being a grunt isn't tons of fun.

What do you guys think of AF ROTC? And what do you think of the AF in general. Is being an AF officer a good thing?

Travel to far away places
meet exotic new people
and Kill Them

Laugh but this was on a recruiting poster I think before WWII.

seriously though, I spent my 4 years and loved it. If I had it to do over I would.

BTW all of the services are falling seriously short on recruiting goals with the exception of Marines. What this means to you is you are in the drivers seat. You should start a dialogue and keep it open for a while you will find out they will offer you bonus money, rank, possibly duty station. what i am trying to say they don't just want you they need you. when someone needs you well I am sure you get my drift. Don't just talk with them three times and sign a sheet of paper.

In 1982 when I signed up for electronics the bonuses were over they were filling the billets easily. But my friend who signed me up got a $20,000 bonus, promotion to PFC, picked where he went to boot camp. He signed up seven months before me.

Check into what you kind of education you can get while on active duty. When i was in I think it was like 80% of tuition. Whatever they tell you make sure you have it in writing. Read the contract three times if you have to but make sure what you agree on is in writing or it is BS.

I suggest you go to an Army base and an Air Force base and talk to young soldiers/airmen and junior officers to get more info firsthand. The Air Force is in need of bilingual folks and has nicer living conditions, healthy bonuses for enlisting, and less dramatic installation police blotters. What part of the country do you live in?

live in Philly PA, I think the closest military base is the Willow Grove AF base. which is about 15 min away.

McGuire AFB is on the Jersey side of the border near Wrightstown. They have active duty and reserve units, and are a major heavy airlift hub. Too bad there are no nearby fighter bases to scope out. Recruiters take group trips to local installations, so ya can go and pick brains for free. Airmen aren't shy, so you will get the full spectrum of views from "this sucks!" to "I can't wait to re-up" and combinations thereof. For AFROTC info ask an oficer who went through it. They are cool about sharing info. Note that many AF jobs do not involve aircraft much. Medical jobs combine a nice life and marketable skills.
If ya do like to wrench aircraft maintenance is fun but hard work at weird hours and involves constant deployments.
Do NOT come in on a general enlistment. Get your job guaranteed on paper.Ditto any enlistment bonuses. Nothing verbal is binding. You have leverage due to the recruit shortage. Post if ya have any questions :)

Jarhead: You missed it completely. It's a joke...ever been in the Army? Let me explain...a 2nd Lt (also known as a Butter Bar) is treated like crap and earns the respect of pretty much other 2nd Lts and ...well, that's about it...yes they make more money but that's not what the joke is about--it refers to the way 2nd Lts are treated, just like privates (not exactly, but its a joke remember) except that a private E-2 has been promoted once, whereas a 2nd Lt has not been. Get it? ;)

The military is great now. On maneovers, we had several women assigned to our outfit. Since it was before I got married, we didn't have to wait until passes were issued to get a whore. The price was cheaper and it was certified clean. I love the new approach the military has to keeping it "in house". Besides the rewards, you can get a post military job that actually pays.

Frogger, from your attitude I seriously doubt that no matter how morally-challenged women assigned to your unit were, you'd be getting any sort of attention discounted. However, I acknowledge that since I'VE never had to pay for that sort of thing (or been paid for it) and you seem very versed on the going rates - based on your obviously vast experience - you could be right.

if your fluent in russian you should use it as leverage to get into sometihng above a grunt the the army...the CIA has a training program of their own, the "Professional Trainee Program" but they do want a degree, i would recommend getting into any branch of the military, get assigned to military intelligence (an oxymoron i know) due to your russian, get them to pay for your degree then move on, i wouldn't life it unless you decide that you really enjoy it...
