how is life in georgia?

Im planning to relocate to Georgia. Do we have any residents here? I plan to go there, stay there for a year and get in state tution for when I can apply for Georgia Tech MBA.

How is life there in general? How are people there? Lots of things to do? how is cost of living? Is Georgia Tech MBA hard to get in to?
 
I'm not sure. I visit Newnan and Kennesaw weekly, and plan on moving to Marietta in the next 6 months. Seems like a nice place...but I've never experienced the state income tax thing, so I'm a bit perturbed by that.

COL isn't much different from Knoxville, TN, except for housing.
 
Dam, is it worth it to move to another state so you can try to apply to a school? Would suck to move there, hang out for a year and then not get in.

But heres a bump for you!
 
Live in Bainbridge, GA, but am in Americus, GA attending Georgia Southwestern State University. I've been to Wisconsin, and Florida, so really complete opposites. Of those places, I like Wisconsin better. This place wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the atrocious summers. A couple months in the 110 degree heat with 95% humidity and I think every Georgian reconsiders living here. Our winters are great though, not near the torture that was Wisconsin.

The air feels more stifling here mainly due to humidity, but overall I think people are more friendly here in the south. And we get iced tea! 😛

Overall, its just a slightly slower way of life, and I personally wouldn't trade it for anything, even if I like *living* in Wisconsin more.

Cost of living is about as cheap as it gets. Gas costs alot less here than in other places. There aren't that many grand places to have fun here but we have a rich history. We have the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta that is gorgeous to behold. We have Andersonville Cemetery which is famous for being a horrid prison camp during the civil war in which several thousand union POW's died due to disease, cramped conditions, and summer heat without shelter. We have some limestone caves that are beautiful to explore. And we also have nice fishing areas such as Lake Seminole. But as I said I definitely noticed that things just are slower down here. SO if you're someone who needs something to do *all* the time, you wont be too happy here.

Well theres personal reasons along with it. but i'm at a point where I want to start a new life, move to a new location, and since I've always wanted to get an MBA.....GT sounds like a match for me. If I dont get in, then I dont get in. I wont move back or anything.

I lived in Atlanta for 1.5 years, from August '06 until last March. I went there for grad school at GT, I applied for a dual masters Electrical Engineering and MBA straight out of undergrad. I got into the MSEE program but not MBA (probably lack of fulltime work experience, maybe bad essays/interview, I had 730/3.7).

Atlanta's a fun city, I liked it a lot. Most people were really nice and welcoming, although I was mainly inside the GT "bubble." Virginia Highlands/Buckhead are some decent places. I lived in Midtown so rent was high depends on what part of the city you want/and if you want roommates.

If you are accepted as a graduate assistant for 20 hrs of work per week, they pay you a stipend and waive tuition to almost 0 (even for out of state): the MBA program has about 20% of the students in that. Engineering programs has much higher percentage, but it has much more money..

I took a few classes with MBA teachers in the relatively new college of management building, pretty nice facilities and good faculty. Business classes are easy 😛

 
GT should be relatively easy to get into for MBA since it's a new program. For example, since many people from my company have gone through the program, I can automatically get in without taking the GMAT.

I like Georgia overall having lived in a few other southern states. I don't like Atlanta much because I despise traffic but I can understand why people do like living in the city. I lived in the burbs of Atlanta for 8 years or so and now I am settled up north in the mountains on Lanier. It stays 5 to 10 degrees colder here than Atlanta so the summers aren't quite so brutal usually. I love having the lake in my backyard and a very affordable house with many acres - something I couldn't get in a lot of states.
 
Interesting thread. I just accepted a job working for a company in GA, but I will be working in CT for the foreseeable future. Guess no mild winters for me.

I'm with you. The ATL can be fun to go visit and do stuff in but not a place I'd want to live. GT should be ok though as it's kind of closed off from the rest of Atlanta.


I'm guessing your somewhere around the Gainesville area? Roughly where I am as well, although I now live farther north.
